Judging a Nativity for Ups and Downs in Career
An Astrologer has often to judge a horoscope for seeing professional attainments of a native. He has to answer questions regarding promotion, losses and gains, transfer, travels, difficulties in work etc. The astrologer has to carefully assess the entire horoscope, the prevailing Dasa periods and transits then give his judgment. The following should be studied:
(i) The prevailing major and sub-period.
(ii) The transits from Moon, in Nakshatras, from natal Sun, 10th lord and also the ascendant. The transit of major and sub-period lord should be seen. They give adverse results when transiting the 6th, 8th or 12th house from natal ascendant.
(iii) See if there are any Raja Yogas, Dhana Yogas, Penury Yogas and other Arishta (misfortune) Yogas in the horoscope. Jupiter in transit when aspecting a good Yoga activates it and Saturn in transit when aspecting a bad Yoga activates it.
(iv) See the position of major and sub-period lord in the Dasamsa chart. They will give bad results in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, in debilitation or inimical houses. The position of Dasamsa ascendant and 10th house and their lords is very important. A planet is connected with the 10th or 2nd house in Rasi Chart and badly afflicted and weak will not give good results even if it is very well placed in the Dasamsa Chart.
(v) The Ascendant, Sun and Moon are the three pivotals of a horoscope, Sage Parasara in the Chapter on Sudarshana Chakra has given them a special importance. If they are all powerful and well placed the native will rise very high in life. If these three are weak and afflicted the native will lack initiative and enterprise and will not be able to achieve much in life.
(vi) The Badhaka lord creates obstacles. It cannot deny an event on its own but will certainly create difficulties and obstacles. Badhaka should be determined as follows:-
- For moveable sign as ascendant the 11th house in Badhak house and 11th lord badhaka adhipati or Badhaka lord.
- For fixed signs as ascendant the 9th house is Badhaka house and its lord the Badhaka lord.
- For dual signs as ascendant the 7th house is the Badhaka and the 7th lord the Badhaka lord.
From this information we derive the Badhaka planets for different ascendants as follows:

Note: Badhaka lords are to be reckoned from the Rasi Chart and Chalit Chakra is not considered while determining them.
The illustration given below demonstrates the effect of a Badhaka planet.
Illustration . Male born June 28, 1952 at 10:05 hrs (IST), Jalandhar; B.O.D. Venus 14Y 6M 19D; Janma Nakshatra: P. Phalguni

Note: In Chalit Chakra, the planets are in the same position as in Rasi-Chart.
In this horoscope Yogakaraka Mars is well placed in an Upachaya Sthana. It is aspected by Jupiter and is exalted in Navamsa and Dasamsa charts. The native had frequent career betterment during the major period of Mars. He earned good money and lead a prosperous life. The native approached during the major period of Rahu and the sub period of Jupiter.
The question was regarding his promotion. Jupiter is the 5th lord placed in the 9th house. It is aspected by Yogakaraka Mars. But Mars is also the Badhaka planet and Jupiter is in the Badhaka house. Therefore, the native was told that he would be denied promotion. The native was denied promotion even though everything looked in his favour.
In the above manner the effect of Badhaka planet should be determined. The transit of Mars from Scorpio and Sagittarius aspecting the natal Mercury was also adverse.
Combinations or Yogas
I am describing below the following three types of Yogas:
- Raja Yogas or Combinations for power and affluence.
- Dhana Yogas or Combinations of wealth.
- Penury Yogas i.e. the combinations which give poverty.
Before describing these Yogas, let me describe the meaning of a Yoga or a combination. The combinations are of the following four types:
(1) Exchange of House: Two planets if occupy each other’s sign, are said to have exchanged houses or signs. This is the most powerful combination.
(2) Mutual Aspect: Mutual aspect between two planets is the second type of combination. This combination is the second most powerful combination.
(3) If a planet is aspected by its dispositor it is the third type of combination. It is less powerful than the above two types of combination.
(4) Conjunction: Two planets in the same sign are said to be in Conjunction. For this type of combination to be effective the two planets should be in the same sign and simultaneously in the same house when seen in the Chalit Chakra. This is the least powerful amongst the four types of combinations. I have found that this combination is powerful when within 10 degrees of each other. It is very powerful when planets are in the same Navamsa.
Besides the above four types of combinations described by Sage Parasara, Mantreshwara in Phaldeepika describes the following two types of combinations:
(1) Two planets in trinal house from each other. For example, Sun in Aries and Jupiter in Leo.
(2) Two planets in an angle or Kendra from each other. For example, Sun in Aries and Jupiter in Cancer.
Variable Karakas And Karakamsa
Before going on to describe the various Yogas, it is important to know about variable Karakas described by Sage Parasara.
We are all aware of the fixed Karakas or significators. For example Sun of soul and father, Moon of Mother, Venus of spouse and so on.
Similarly, Sage Parasara also describes Variable Karakas which vary in different horoscopes.
- The planet whose degrees are the highest is the Atmakaraka (Significator of Soul).
- The second highest is the Amatya Karaka (Significator of ministerial position).
- The third highest is Bhratri Karaka.
- The fourth highest is Matri Karaka.
- Fifth is Pitri Karaka.
- Sixth highest is Putra Karaka.
- Seventh is the Nati Karaka
- and the planet whose longitude is the least becomes the Dara or Stree Karaka.
Note: For considering the Variable Karakas Ketu is not considered. That is, only eight planets, Sun to Rahu are to be considered.

In the above example Karakas can be tabulated as below. This means that Mercury whose degrees are the highest i.e. 13°13′, becomes the Atmakaraka. Similarly other Karakas are determined.
The readers will also notice that the degrees traversed by Rahu in a sign are considered starting from 30 degrees. This is so because Rahu is always retrograde. In our example the degrees traversed by Rahu are (30°-26°12′) = 3°38
Note: These are responsible for considering certain types of Raja Yogas.
Karakamsa: The sign in which Navamsa occupied by Atma Karaka falls becomes the Karakamsa. In our example, Atamakaraka Mercury is in Libra Navamsa. Therefore, Libra becomes the Karakamsa.
Raja Yogas
(1) In Hindu astrology the angles have been described as the abode of Lord Vishnu or Preserver and Protector. Trines have been described as the abode of Goddess Laxmi (Goddess of Wealth). Their combination cause the most powerful Raja Yogas. Therefore, we have:
(i) Trine + Angle = Raja Yoga.
Less powerful Raja Yogas are formed by the combination of two trinal lords and two angle lords. Thus we have,
(ii) Trine + Trine = Raja Yoga.
(iii) Angle + Angle = Raja Yoga.
Illustration. Napoleon Bonaparte borne on August 15, 1769 at 11:30 AM. (LMT) at 41°N55, 8E40°; B.O.D. Sun OY-8M-24D; Janma Nakshatra : U. Shadda

In this horoscope notice the following Raja Yogas :
(i) Lords of Angles 4th (Saturn) and 10th (Moon) exchange houses.
(ii) Lords of a Trine 5th (Saturn) and an angle 9th (Moon) are in mutual aspects.
(ii) Lord of Trine (9th lord Mercury) and Lord of angle (10th lord Moon) are in mutual aspects.
(iv) Lord of trine (9th lord Mercury) is in conjunction with Yogakaraka (4th and 5th lord) Saturn in the 10th house.
(2) Sage Parasara describes another powerful type of Raja Yogas as follows:
(i) Combination of Atmakaraka and Putrakaraka i.e.: Atmakaraka + Putrakaraka.
(ii) Combination of ascendant lord and the 5th lord i.e. : 1st lord + 5th lord.
These are to be considered from two ascendants:
(a) Ascendant i.e. the rising sign.
(b) Karakamsa ascendant.
Note: Karakamsa is to be considered in the Rasi-Chart.
In Napoleon’s horoscope, Karakamsa ascendant is Aries. From Karakamsa ascendant lord is Mars and fifth Lord from that is Sun. They are both in combination in Leo. This is a powerful Raja Yoga.
(3) Combination of Atmakaraka with: (a) Ascendant Lord (b) Putrakara (c) Karakamsa ascendant lord, a Raja Yoga is formed.
In Napoleon’s horoscope Atma karaka Mercury and Putrakaraka Moon are in Mutual aspect, forming a Raja Yoga.
(4) A very interesting Raja Yoga is described by Sage Parasara, as such: If lords of evil houses (6, 8 and 12) are debilitated and aspect ascendant, a Raja Yoga is formed.
(5) A strong and well placed Moon when aspected by 4 or more planets a Raja Yoga is formed.
(6) If Amatya Karaka is in combination with the following a Raja Yoga is formed: (i) Atmakaraka (ii) Ascendant lord (iii) Putrakaraka (iv) Karakamsa lord.
Note: These Raja Yogas are common in the horoscope of bureaucrat and civil servants.
(5) Nodes when in combination with a trinal or an angular lord from a very powerful Raja Yoga. For this the node (Rahu or Ketu) should be in an angle, trine, 2nd, 11th or the third house.
Note: When such a node in a Raja Yoga is in the house of valour i.e. the third house, the native may become a dictator.
Other Important Yogas:
(1) Kesari and Gaja Kesari Yoga: Jupiter in a Kendra to Moon. It becomes very powerful when one of these two is aspected by Venus.
(2) Amla Yoga: Benefics in the 10th house from Moon. (In Napoleon’s horoscope, Jupiter is in the 10th house from Moon, thus forming both Gaja Kesari and Amala Yogas).
(3) Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas: (5 Yogas for a great person). If any of the five planets Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are in own house or exaltation and simultaneously in an angular house, they form the five Mahapurusha Yogas.
- Saturn so placed forms Saga Yogas.
- Jupiter so placed forms Hamsa Yoga.
- Mercury so placed forms Bhadra Yoga.
- Venus so placed forms Malavya Yoga.
- Mars so placed forms Ruchaka Yoga.
These Yogas make native daring, enterprising and give him leadership qualities. The basic characteristics are according to the planet concerned.
(4) Kahala Yoga: If dispositor of the ascendant lord is exalted or in own sign and is simultaneously in an angular or a trinal house Kahala Yoga is formed. The native with a Kahala Yoga is enterprising. brave, intelligent, cheerful, friendly and well respected by his associates.
(5) Neecha Bhanga Yogas or Cancellation of debilitation: There are very important. Cancellation of debilitation gives a native prosperity in the end. As the planet is debilitated difficulties are experienced but in the end the native is able to overcome these difficulties during the period of concerned planet itself.
Note: (a) I have found these working in divisional charts also.
(b) Some charlatans give remedies on seeing a debilitated planet with debilitation cancelled. They then feel happy that the native is able to overcome his difficulties due to remedies.
Actually it is because of the cancellation of debilitation that the native is able to overcome his difficulties and not due to any remedy. The cancellation of debilitation occurs under the following circumstances:
- If the dispositor of the debilitated planet is in an angular house from ascendant or the Moon.
- If the lord of the sign where such a planet is exalted is in an angle from the ascendant or the Moon.
- If the debilitated planet is aspected by its dispositor.
- The debilitated planet is in own or exalted Navamsa.
Note: The planet with whose help the debilitation is cancelled should be strong and well placed.
(6) Vipneeta Raja Yoga: If lords of evil houses i.e., the 6th, 8th or the 12th house are in combination a Vipreeta Raja Yoga is formed. Vipreeta means opposite. The native rises from difficulties and from adverse situations to rise to a high position.
Dhana Yogas or Wealth giving Combinations
The second house is the house of wealth. Eleventh house is the house of income and gains. In the following circumstances, these form Dhana Yogas:
(1) Trine + Second house.
(2) Trine + Eleventh house.
(3) Angle + Second house.
(4) Angle + Eleventh house.

(5) Second house + 11th house.
(6) Second lord + Rahu or Ketu.
(7) Eleventh lord + Rahu or Ketu.
Jupiter is the significator of wealth. When it is in combination with 9th lord (fortune) or second lord or eleventh lord a Dhana Yoga is formed.
Sage Parasara based on the above rules gives some special Raja Yogas. Let us study these, because they help us in understanding how Dhana Yogas manifest.
(1) If there is a sign owned by Venus (Taurus or Libra) in the fifth house and it is occupied by Venus and Mars from the 11th house aspects it a Dhana Yoga is formed.
(2) Mercury in the fifth house in own sign aspected by Mars and Moon from 11th house a Dhana is formed.
The readers should notice the following Raja Yogas and Dhana Yogas:
(1) Ascendant occupied Rahu aspected by dispositor Mars.
(2) Mutual aspect between 9th and 10th lords.
(3) Mutual aspect between 9th lord and 11th lord.
(4) 10th lord with 11th lord in the 9th house.
(5) Second lord Jupiter in the 11th house with 7th (Kendra) lord Venus and 4th (Kendra) lord.
(6) Second and fifth lord Jupiter aspects 9th lord Moon.
Thus the readers can understand that every planet is in a Raja Yoga or Dhana Yoga. These were responsible for making native the richest man on earth during his times. This is a simple case where astrological rules can be easily applied and seen even by a beginner in astrology.
Poverty Yogas and Yogas for misfortunes
Houses 6, 8 and 12 are evil houses. Their involvement is necessary for poverty and misfortune. The bad Yogas are formed in the following manner:
(1) Lords of second and eleventh in the 6th, 8th and 12th house. It causes losses and poverty.
(2) Lords of trines in 6, 8, 12 cause misfortune, grief and loss of position.
(3) Lords of angular house in 6, 8, 12 cause misfortune, grief and loss of position.
(4) Lord of 3d in 6, 8 or 12 creates obstacles in life.
The above are the most important ‘bad Yogas’. The other Yogas for misfortune are:
(1) Kemadruma Yoga: This causes calamities, poverty, loss of position and grief. It is formed when there are no planets in second or
twelfth from Moon except the nodes or the Sun. It gets cancelled if a planet aspects Moon or a planet other than Sun, Rahu or Ketu is in an angle from Moon.
(2) Nirdhana Yoga: If Sun is weak and afflicted in an angular house and is debilitated in Navamsa it causes extreme poverty.
(3) Shakata Yoga: When Jup is in 6th, 8th or 12th from the Moon sign and Moon is not in an angular house Shakata Yoga is formed. This Yoga causes ups and downs in life, obstacles and mental tension.
(4) If ascendant lord, Sun and Moon are all weak and afflicted the native leads an ordinary life.
(5) If second lord is combust, afflicted and debilitated the native is burdened with loans.
Important Points to Remember
The readers should remember the following important points while interpreting Yogas:
(1) If the planet involved in Raja Yogas or Dhana Yoga extremely weak and afflicted its results will not be felt and the native will only experience adversities.
(2) A planet if in a bad Yoga but strongly placed for example in exalted Navamsa aspected by benefics it will give good results.
(3) The Yogas should be reckoned in Dasamsa also when studying the horoscope for the native’s career.
Success in Business
To see whether the native will be successful in business study the following houses:
(i) Second House because it is the house of wealth.
(ii) Fifth house because it is the house of gains from investments and risk taking.
(ii) Tenth house because it is concerned with the native’s career and status.
(iv) Eleventh house because it shows income and gains.
(v) Ninth house because it is the house of fortune and luck.
The above houses should be strong and well placed. Only then should a person think of Venturing into own business.
Transits
Transits are to be studied both from the Moon sign and the ascendant. While studying transit from the ascendant, remember the following points:
(1) See the transits in the same manner as planets in their natal position are studied. The planets transiting 6, 8 or 12 become weak.
(2) Give special attention to the transits of major and sub-period lord. If they transit 6, 8 or 12 or their debilitation sign or are combust in transit adverse results are experienced.
(3) Transit of Jupiter over natal position of a planet is good. Jupiter if in transit aspects the natal position of major lord or sub period lord gives beneficial results.
(4) Jupiter activates the sign it transits. It also activates a Raja Yoga or Dhana Yogas when it aspects in transit. This will be so even if the Dasa of the concerned planets is not in operation.
(5) Saturn when transiting over natal position of a planet gives misfortunes. Its aspect is also bad. Saturn transiting in the 7th from or over natal Sun causes unfortunate developments in a native’s career. Operating sub period lord decides whether the native will overcome these adversities or not.
(6) Benefics transiting over natal position of Dasa lord do good and malefic cause difficulties.
Rise in Career – A Case Study
Birth Details
Date of birth – 6th January 1915
Time of birth – 9:32:42 AM IST
Place of birth – Lat. 23o42’ N ; Long. 90o25’ E
Day of birth – Wdnesday
Bhav – Chart
Bhav IV – Saturn (R)
Bhav VI – Ketu, Moon
Bhava IX – Venus
Bhava XI- Mars, sun, Mercury
Bhava XII – Jupiter, Rahu.
1. Rahu is equivalent to Jupiter, because of its association with Jupiter in 12th Bhava, the longitudinal distance between them being only 5°16′
2. Ketu is equivalent to Sun, because it is posited in the sign Leo, ruled by Sun. Moreover, the longitudinal distance between Ketu and Moon, with whom Ketu is associated is 11°36, which is more than the orb required.
Astrological Analysis – For rise in career, let us analyse the houses 2, 6, 10 and 11. House 2 and 6 indicate merely service, 2nd house standing for self-acquisition and 6th house for service, but in order that a person should rise, the houses 10 and 11 must be strong; between these two houses too, house 11 must be strong and powerful, because of all the twelve houses, it is the 11th house alone, which opens the door to realization of one’s ambition.
2nd house is unoccupied by any planet. Jupiter is lord of 2. Jupiter governs Punarvasu, Visakam and Poorvapathra. No planet is in these constellations. Hence take Jupiter, but Jupiter is a weak significator, being posited in Aquarius, a sign ruled by Saturn and Saturn and Jupiter are neutrals to each other.
6th house is occupied by Ketu and Moon. Ketu governs Aswini, Makam and Moolam. No planet is in these constellations except Ketu. No planet is in the Sub of Ketu. Hence Ketu will keep him in service. Similarly Moon governs Rohini, Hastham and Sravanam. No planet is in these constellations. Hence Moon will also retain him in service.
What about houses 10 and 11 ? 10th houses is unoccupied by any planet. Mars is lord of 10. Mars governs Mrigasira, Chithrai and Dhanishta. Saturn is in Mrigasira and Jupiter and Rahu are in Dhanishta. Hence take Saturn. Jupiter and Rahu.
11th house is occupied by Sun, Mars and Mercury. Sun governs Karthikai, Utharapalguni and Utharashada. No planet is in these constellations. Sun is posited in the sign Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, his friend. So give importance to Sun.
Only Venus and Saturn (R) are in the sub of Sun. Venus is posited in 9th Bhava, which is 12th from 10. Further it is in the sign Scorpio, ruled by Mars. Mars and Venus are neutral to each other. Hence Venus is a weak significator, but being posited in the constellation, it will give mixed results.
Saturn is already a significator; further it is the sole planet, who is posited in the constellation of Mars and sub of Sun. Mars and Sun – both are the occupants of 11th Bhava. Hence Saturn is very strong to give the effect of promotion.
We have already considered the planets in the constellation of Mars, while considering 10th house.
Mercury governs Ashlesha, Jyeshta and Revathi. No planet is in these constellations. Mercury is posited in the sign Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, who treats him as his enemy. Hence Mercury is weak.
Therefore, Saturn, Jupiter and Rahu are the strong significators for rise in career of this native. Jupiter and Rahu are in conjunction with each other. Rahu is at 6°10′ in Aquarius and Jupiter is at 0°54′ in the same sign. Rahu, being a node is more powerful. Moreover, Rahu is posited in the constellation of Mars. Lord of 10 and in the sub of Moon, occupant of 6th Bhava and lord of 6. Hence Rahu is more powerful than Jupiter.
The native runs Saturn Antara under Rahu Dasa, Moon Bhukti from 13-6-1967 to 9-9-1967. Saturn is a strong significator for promotion. The longitudinal distance between Moon and Saturn is 72°45; which amounts almost to exact Quintile aspect (i.e. 72 degrees aspect), which is good. Therefore Saturn will cooperate with Moon to give the effect of promotion.
I told the officer that files of promotion should have moved favourably after 13-6-1967, which was confirmed by him. He told me that his immediate boss has recommended his case of promotion very highly after this date.
But still as Moon is operating in Bhukti, who is not a significator at all, it is predicted that the native will not get stable promotion during Rahu Dasa Moon Bhukti, although it is sure that he will get some casual or temporary charge of some higher office. This is also true of Rahu Dasa, Mars Bhukti, which the native runs from 24-4-1968 to 12-5-196.
The native will get stable promotion during the conjoined period of all the three strong significators, Rahu, Jupiter and Saturn. He will run Jupiter Dasa, Saturn Bhukti, Rahu Antara from 23-4-1973 to 10-9-1973. Let us confirm it by western aspect.
The longitudinal distance between Jupiter and Saturn is 124°07; which amounts to separating trine (120 degrees) aspect. Further, as already analysed, the longitudinal distance between Saturn and Rahu is 118°51′ which amounts to applying trine (120 degrees) aspect, which is again powerful for good. Hence it is confirmed that the native will be surely promoted during the above mentioned period.
Underground Wealth – Underground wealth may be either a treasure which has been kept buried by one’s own ancestors or by anybody else from whom either the building of the land would have been purchased or taken on rental basis. For anything buried and which is under the ground, planet Saturn must have connection with the 4th house. Of all the planets Saturn is the only one planet which indicates Geology, anything kept under the ground of taken from the ground.
Of all the houses, 4th house shows the earth, the building or even the furniture. I have heard when I was very young that villagers used to keep sovereigns in the bamboo sticks used for cot or roof. They never give the cot for others’ use even though they are close relatives. They used to say that unless they take their bed in the cot, they would not get sleep as though either there is superstition or there is some sanctity. The fact would be that coins were inserted horizontally in the bamboo sticks used, as bamboos have hollow spaces. They are kept there as safely vaults.
Hence the house which we have to judge would be the 4th to find out whether something is hidden. To confirm that one is fortunate enough to get it, we have to judge the houses 11 and also 8.
