Applications of Some Important Yogas

Mr. W. E. Cladstone was bome in Sagittarius with Sun and Mercury in the birth-degree, and Jupiter in 4th in his own house and in 7th from Mon in 10th, Mars, lord of 5 (and 12th) being in exaltation. Every student of English History knows he was one of the famous Premiers of England. Mark Sun and Mercury together in close conjunction in Lagna, with the lord of the Ascendant strong in 4th and in his own house, with Hamsa Yoga and also Kesari Yoga, as Jupiter is in 180° from the Moon. Mercury in combustion is not evil but good.

If Mercury is in his own house closely combust by the Sun, the native is a leamed king; this rule does not apply to other planets. So, even for Kanya (Virgo) Lagna or Mithuna (Gemini) Lagna, for which Sun is lord of 12th or of 3, if Mercury is combust but in his own house, it is good.

For Dhanur (Sagittarius) Lagna, Sun and Mercury are the lords of 9th and 10th. So, Mercury’s combustion does not matter. In fact, close and exact conjunction heightens the Raja Yoga, due to the combination of the lords of 9 and 10. But, I have seen Sun and Mercury in 5th, with Venus (lord of 6th and 11th) and Moon (lord of 8th), for Dhanur Lagna being a failure in life, born to inherit considerable properties but eliminating them and becoming poor. That shows lord of 6 or 8 mars the Raja Yoga caused by 9th and 10th lords.

Some say, that Parasara has stated that the Sun and Moon do not have evil of ownership of 8th and so, Moon is not bad for Dhanur Lagna. She may be passable, when with, or in opposition to Jupiter or Guru. But, to say Moon is not bad, as lord of 8, is not quite correct. In fact, the author of the Uttarakalamrita has clarified the matter by saying, Sun or Moon as lord of 8th is not a maraka-planet, though giving troubles.

To my mind, it is clear from experience that Sun for Makara (Capricorn) Lagna is not god as lord of 8th, as Sun and the ascendant-lord are bitter enemies of each other. However, when Sun is in Lagna, and Saturn is in 8th, for Capricorn I have found that Sun does not spoil and his Dasa is good.

I have seen a Kanya (Virgo) Lagna chart with Mars in 8th aspecting Mercury and Venus, in 11th, with, however, Moon, the lord of that 11th house weak. The native misappropriated his client’s money as a lawyer but managed to escape proceedings under the Legal Practitioner’s Act, as his whereabouts could not be known. Mark Mars, the worst lord of 3 and 8 aspecting the 9th and 10th lords, Mars, lord of 3 and 8, is best in 3 and may be in 8; but his aspect is rather baneful.

On the other hand, I give below the chart (No. 1) of an eminent I. C. S., who rose to be an Executive Councillor and even an Acting Governor of Bombay, I think, in the last days of British Rule.

I do not remember the exact positions of Saturn, Rahu and Kethu. But, I remember well, they do not mar or eclipse the Yogakarakas. The native was a fearless and independent Indian I. C. S., of ability, scholarship and integrity. Please mark the key planets, Mercury and Venus, the lords of 1st and 10th, and of 2nd and 9th in 11th and Moon, the lord of 11th exalted in 9th and aspected by Jupiter.

Evil Mars, lord of 3rd and 8th, is relegated to 12th, a safe place to corner him. Jupiter cause Vasumathi Yoga and explain his being born in a rich family.

In a certain female horoscope (Chart No. 2) Mercury and Venus are very well combined in Lagna, as lords of 10 (and 1) and 9 (and 2) respectively. But, Venus, the lord of 9 the house of luck and good fortune, is rather weak, in combustion, for, though the combustion of

Mercury is not at all harmful, the combustion of Venus is not good. Luckily, Venus has obtained Neechabhanga (cancellation of debility) as Mercury is exalted (within the first 5 degrees of Virgo); 3rd and 8th lord, Mars in 2nd and his dashas periods were not good.

The horoscope shows a poor father, in ordinary position, who will, however, rise up fairly well, though not very high. According to Saravali, Sun Moon, Mercury and Venus together, aspected by Jupiter from his own house in a Kendra (though 7 is also the Badhakasthana for a dual sign), show a good enough combination.

But, my point is just to emphasize that the 9 and 10 Yoga, here, is just ordinary but not outstanding, as the combining of 9th and 10th lords are not quite so strong. So, the horoscope is fairly good but not very brilliant or excellent, (despite 9 and 10 Yoga and Kesari Yoga), whereas our President Radhakrishnan has Mercury and Venus, unsullied in lagna (Virgo), Mars being in 12th.

As already indicated above for Dharma Karmadhipa Yoga to give real and high Raja Yoga, i.e., position and power, there should be no combination or aspect of lords of 3, 6, 8, 11 and 12.

Everyone will understand why the association of baneful lords of 3, or 6 or 8 or 12, particularly 6 and 8 lords is, taboo. But, they may put the question: Why is the lord of 11’s combination or association prohibited?

Because our ancient text says the 9th and 10th lords give success if unassociated with the lords of 8 or 11, so that there is a rule that for Aries (or Mesha Lagna) for which Saturn, lord of 10, is also lord of 11th (for a Chara Lagna and hence Badhakadhipati) and for Gemini (or Mithuna Lagna), for which Jupiter, lord of 10, also owns 7 (the Badhakas for a dual sign) and Saturn, lord of 9, is also lord of 8, there is no use in banking on 9 and 10 Yoga. But, this rule has to be very carefully understood and applied.

I give now the horoscope (Chart No. 3) of a gentleman who was the Accountant General of Madras and then (even after retirement) the Financial Adviser to Indore and Baroda. Mark Jupiter lord of 10 in 9. A benefic owning Kendras gets Kendradhipa Dosha (quadrangular affliction); but, it does not mean, he is bad, in the sense that lord of 6 or lord of 8 is bad. It only means, he may kill as a maraka if there is no longevity.

But, lord of 10 in 9, and especially in 9 is seen to be very good for Mithuna Lagna, though I do not quite like Jupiter in 7, even if he may give the native a good-natured and handsome wife. In the instant case, lord of 10, Jupiter, is in 9; and 9th lord Saturn is in 10.

So, the evil of Saturn’s lordship of 9 or Jupiter lordship of 7 cannot and do not affect the native. Mark also Sun, exalted in 1, a good feature, and Mercury and Venus, as lords of 1 and 4 and 5 (and 2), together in 11. The native was generally fortunate.

I shall give another horoscope (Chart No. 4) to illustrate my point. It is this:-

The native was born as one of a number of children of an ordinary Excise official. Mark Mercury lord of Lagna, in Neechabhanga. But, 1, 5 and 9 lords are in 10 and 10th lord is in Lagna. So, the horoscope is good enough, even for international reputation. But, the aspect of mars, lord of 6 and 11th on 10, the combination, and on the house lord Jupiter in Lagna is not good.

But, it is unable to mar the Yoga, though it reduces the grade of success and reputation and in the Dasa of Mars, his rise was obstructed. The native is a very intelligent and brilliant I.C.S. and was connoisseur of music and delayedly elevated from a District Judgeship as a High Court Judge only in the Dasa of Rahu, whose fag-end however may mark his life’s end, too, as Mars aspects Rahu also.

9 and 10 Yoga is the Yoga par excellence. But, to bear good fruit and to give outstanding and pronounced prosperity, the 9th and oth lords must be associated in a good Bhava or house free from the malefic influence of Saturn or Mars, unless either of these planets happens to own the Ascendant or Lagna and so becomes the ruling planet for the native and free from the spoiling influence of the lords of 3, or 6 or 12 or 8 or 11.

This takes me to two important points. Firstly, the owners of 9 and 10, who must be in a good house and not in 3 or 6 or 8 or 12, should be so in Bhava Chakra or house-position, and not merely in Rasi. A planet, apparently in 9 from Lagna, may be in 8 in Bhava. Similarly, a planet, apparently in 6, may be good in 5 in Bhava.

Secondly, the lord of Lagna must be well placed and well associated, and much stronger than the lords of 6 or 8, for instance. Phaladeepika says, that, if no malefic in a quadrant or trine, i.e., 1 or 4 or 7 or 10, or 5 or 9, and if lord of Lagna and Jupiter are together in Kendras (1 or 4 or 7 or 10) the native does good work, conducting to Punya, enjoys manifold enjoyments and lives long (100 years) free from disease.

According to Jataka Parijata, if the lord of Lagna or the Ascendant is in a Trikona (5 or 9) or a Kendra (1, or 4 or 7 or 10) with or aspected by a benefic, and in the house of a benefic (i.e., of Jupiter, of Venus or of full Moon or of well-associated Mercury), and strong, the native achieves widespread fame (extending to the four seas or oceans).

Jatakalankara says that if the lord of Lagna is in a Kendra, preferably in his own or exaltation house, with Jupiter or Venus in the house of a benefic and aspected by a benefic, the native will be a principled man of character, esteemed and respected by all people and gets all Sampath (of 8 kinds) and shines like a Sun, among men.

Thus, it is seen that Lagnadhipati or the ruling planet must be well associated and well placed in a Kendra or Kona, for the native to be able to enjoy any Yoga. A dyspeptic patient cannot enjoy rich food and fruits in his house: even so, a person, with Lagnadhipati weak in 3 or 8 or 12 or in Neecha and ill-associated cannot prosper much; and any Yoga may benefit the father, or elder or younger brother, etc., as the case may be and not the native.

The above statement, however, requires one qualification. Lord of Lagna Neechabhanga enables the native to break his poor birth’s invidious bar and rise to clutch the golden keys of opulence and prosperity or power and position. Equally, Lagnadhipati in oocha-bhanga indicates a person born in a well-to-do place going down later. To illustrate:-

For Aries or Mesha Lagna, Mars in 4 in neecha is bad; but, with exalted Jupiter in 4 and with or aspected by a full Moon, gives distinct Neechabhanga Raja Yoga, meaning rise, from obscurity and poverty to fame and prosperity. Similarly, if for Aries, Mars is exalted in 10 in Digbala (directional strength) but Saturn is debilitated in Lagna, it is a case of oocha-bhanga, as the debility of Saturn, the lord of Capricorn where Mars is exalted, spoils Mars by evil aspect.
