When the 10th from the Ascendant and the Moon are devoid of planets, the means of livelihood of the native will be indicated by the lords of the native will be indicated by the lords of the Navamsas of the planets owning the 10th from the Ascendant, the Sun and the Moon.

The native will have his livelihood by merchandising

(1) different kinds of grass; grass used for thatching roofs, grass used for religious purposes, used as fodder for cattle, used for making mats, etc.

(2) gold and articles of gold, and

(3) blankets and clothes made of wool.

He may maintain himself by dealing in medicines or by their administration when the Sun happens to be the Navamsa lord.

Works connected with nails, teeth and skins (ivory and leather works); cruel deeds, military service, travels, government jobs, and aircraft may also be indicated.

The Moon as the Navamsa Lord makes the native do agricultural work, trade in conches, pearls, lotus flowers and the like, water-borne products and serve fair sex for a living.

Sugarcane (sugar factories), milk (dairy farms), clothes (textile mills), flowers (cosmetics and scents), sports and games, and cereals like paddy. etc., are represented by the Moon.

When the Navamsa is owned by Mars, the Native deals in metals like copper, lead, bell metal, silver and gold, and in sulphur and gunpowder ingredients. His work will be very near fire. He may be engaged in ammunition factories. Trade in weapons or use of them may also be his lot. Unmindful of time or place, he may enter into dangerous occupations. Making or selling omaments may also be his work.

Military service, government jobs, land’ and agriculture and trade in woollen goods Brothers of the native are other sources of income pointed out by Mars.

Writing verses etc., astronomy, accountancy, fine arts like drawing and painting and sculptural work form the sources of income of the native when mercury owns the Navamsa of the 10th lord. The following items also may be noted:-ambassadorial work, research, teaching, and friends and relatives. Manufacture of machinery items, gambling, dance and drama and humorous acts are also included by some authors.

The native eams his livelihood by dependence on the learned and the good, performance of religious rites and sacrifices, and work in institutions for the poor and in salt pits if Jupiter is the lord of the Navamsa, Religious discourses, law and justice, executive jobs in the government and banking business form other sources of income.

Venus, as Lord of the Navamsa, enables the native to live by trade in gems, silver and similar metals and cows and buffaloes. Dairy products, ornamental goods, dance, drama and fine arts, food, clothes and fair sex are some other ways of maintenance.

Tiresome journeys, cruel deeds (butchery), carrying loads and all hard labour fall to the lots of the native when Saturn happens to own the Navamsa of the 10th lord. Some attribute thieving and lying to this position of Saturn. Donkeys, camels, birds and buffaloes may from other sources of income.

The lord of the Navamsa of the owner of the 10th posited in a friendly sign shows gain of money through fiends and relatives. In an inimical sign through enemies; in his own sign by personal efforts, and in his exaltation sign through unexpected, easy means.

At this point, it will be interesting to ponder over a few Sutras of Jaimini on the subject. The planet posited in the Navamsa sign of Atmakaraka has been said to indicate the nature of the native’s profession.

The Sun in the Navamsa sign of Atmakaraka points to works of public utility. He may have close connections with the affairs of the State. If the full Moon and Venus combine in the Navamsa, the deep knowledge of the native will win him his sustenance. Jupiter shows a priest or one with a good knowledge of the Vedas and other religious texts. Mercury helps the native become a merchant or a weaver who will evince keen interest in matters political and social. A noted political leader is born when Venus and Atmakaraka associate in the Navamsa of the latter.

The native rises to a high status in society by untiring efforts if the combination of Saturn and Atmakaraka occurs in the Navamsa sign. He will follow the profession of his forefathers. The Moon and Jupiter falling together in the Navamsa sign of Atmkaraka or in the 5th sign reckoned from the Navamsa sign, indicate an author of many books. (He may also be a book-seller or a librarian).

The native will be a celebrated poet when Venus occupies the Navamsa sign of Atmakaraka or the 5th sign here from. Rahu and Atmakaraka in the Navamsa sign of the latter produce a clever thief or a dealer in poisons and such other hazardous ‘chemicals.

The native will be one amongst the ruling authorities of the country if the Sun and Venus aspect the Navamsa sign of Atmakaraka. The native trades in cattle when the Sun aspected by Jupiter occupies the 10th sign counted from the Navamsa sign. An expert in making watches and clocks is made by Kethu posited in the 4th sign from the Navamsa. Rahu in that position makes the native clever in making or operating machines and instruments. The Moon posited in the Navamsa sign of Atmakaraka or in the 5th sign there from brings forth an expert musician the Sun a keen philosopher or a musician and Kethu a clever mathematician or an astronomer.

According to Sri Ganesa, the Navamsa of the lord of the 10th Bhava falling in a malefic sign does not attract any bad effect when the 10th lord gets posited in his own or exaltation sign or in the 10th Bhava itself.

The Tenth Bhava

At the outset, the strength of the Ascendant and the Moon-sign is to be determined. The 10th Bhava from the stronger of the two is said to indicate the means of livelihood. The source of earnings is also pointed out by the strong planet(s) placed in the selected 10th Bhava.

If no planets occupy the 10th, the profession may be determined by the lord of the 10th itself according to its strength. In the absence of planets in the 10th, the occupation of the native may be known, as stated by an author, from the planet in the Ascendant, from the planets aspecting the Sun and the Moon and from the planets falling on either side of the Sun or the 10th.

Generally, malefics occupying all the Kendras in a chart show undesirable means of livelihood while benefic planets point out honourable and lucrative professions. A benefic 10th lord, a benefic 10th lord aspected by or associated with a benefic planet or such a 10th lord with a benefic Navamsa-all these point to highly authoritative occupations and fat incomes.

If the Sun is posited in the 10th. The native gets wealth from father, the Moon from mother, Mars enemies, Mercury relatives, Jupiter brothers, Venus wife or sisters, and is Saturn from servants. The source of income is said to be from father when the benefic lord of the 10th get the connections of the Sun. The lord of the 10th occupying the 4th or the 9th when the Sun is debilitated, indicates wealth from mother.

Mars points out gain from brothers when he associates with the lord of the 10th or gets posited in the 10th. The combination of the lord of the 6th with Mars in the 10th gives enemy’s earnings. Association of

Mercury with the lord of the 10th or his position in the 10th indicates money from friends; Jupiter under similar conditions points to wealth from ruling authorities, Venus wealth from wife, Saturn from other people or servants and Rahu and Kethu wealth from low class people. If two planets fall in 10th Bhava, money is said to accrue through both the sources indicated by the planets during their Dasas. If many planets come to be posited in the 10th, gain of money may happen during the Dasas of all the planets.

An exalted 10th lord enables the native to gain his sustenance by honourable ways with minimum effort while a debilitated one subjects the native to despicable means and hard labour.

The combination of the 10th lord with Saturn in a Kendra or a malefic Navamsa aspected by the lord of the 8th points to unpleasant jobs. Heinous work, occasional employments and a miserable life are the results of a malefic in the 10th aspected by another malefic when the lord of the 10th is weak.

The position of the Lord of the 10th in the 4th shows education, knowledge, vehicles and fame. The friendly relation of the lords of the 4th and the 10th assures maternal wealth and good earnings by his knowledge. The native may come by hidden treasure or unexpected wealth when the Lords of the 4th and the 10th fall in their own or exaltation signs coinciding with highly favourable Bhavas.

A strong lord of the 10 Bhava in the 5th gives the native wealth from father and sons and aids him to earn a lot by his intelligence. Easy money flows to the native if lords of the 10th and the 5th are sufficiently strong and well posited. The native gets his enemy’s wealth when the lord of the 10th is placed in the 6th Bhava which agrees with his own or exaltation sign.

The placement of the 10th lord in the 7th or his association with the lord of the 7th shows gain of wealth from wife. The native gets exceedingly rich by his righteous actions and through his elders and preceptors when the 10th lord is posited in the 9th agreeing with his exaltation, own or friendly sign.

A rich and happy life with a good name is indicated by the position of a strong lord of the 10th in the 2nd or the 11th as also in Kendras or Thrikonas. The association of the 9th and 10th lords in the 12th shows that the native spends a lot on laudable causes. The native will have highly lucrative positions in the government if the lord of the 10th combines with the Sun or the Moon or gets posited in the sign owned by one of them.

The combination of the lord of the 10th with Mars shows a military captain or a soldier in the army. In association with Mercury, the 10th lord makes the native a writer or a journalist or an astronomer or astrologer or a clerk. Girls and women may also picture in his ways of making a livelihood. With Mercurial connections the lord of the 10th points to mercantile occupations.

The native earns for his living through religious discussions, priest-craft and through men of knowledge when the 10th lord associates with Jupiter. The combination of the 10th lord with Venus shows the ruler of a State (Governor, Minister or President). The native with this combination may also have earnings through women, cows, elephants, horses, gold, precious stones, and pearls.

When strong Mars and the lord of the 4th join in a Kendra or a Trikona or the 11th Bhava the lord of the 10th associated with or aspected by Venus and the Moon points to agricultural pursuits. Life in a forest (secluded life), a thieving nature, trade in timber and trees and gain from the low class people are the effects of the combination of the 10th lord and Saturn. Work in furnaces or with fire and steam engines, making vessels with metals and running hotels and lodgings are shown by Mars and Rahu or Kethu falling together in the 10th or when they combine with the lord of the 10th. This combination also makes magicians, experts in black arts, dealers in poisonous materials and physicians skilled in poison cure. When Jupiter and Venus are associated with malefics, a malefic lord of the 10th Bhava posited in the 6th, the 8th or the 12th shows unrighteous means of livelihood of the native.

The effects of planetary combinations in the 10th from the Moon given above are for guidance only as the characteristics of the sign in which the 10th falls will also bear upon them. The strength of each planet in the combination decides the percentage of its Karakathwa entering the union. The stronger the planet, the more will be its contribution.

The effects of Mars-Jupiter combination in Cancer and Capricom 10th Bhavas and of Mercury-Sun-Venus association in Virgo, and Pisces 10th Bhavas cannot be identical. It is also to be noted that the planets in a combination have to be within 5° to 8° in a sign if the yoga is to yield full effects. The Moon in 4° and Jupiter in 22° of a sign do not produce the effects of a yoga.

All the indicated effects have to be corrected, taking into account these factors which really call for the ingenuity of the astrologer. It will not also be possible to codify accurate results of the infinite permutations and combinations of planets.

Horoscopes of engineers will show Mercury with all the points of strength owning the 10th or posited in the 10th. Skilled engineers may be found having their Ascendants in Virgo, Gemini, Sagittarius and Aquarius. (We have also plenty of instances where other signs also figure as Ascendants). Gemini Ascendants with Mercury in the Ascendant or the 10th: Virgo Ascendants having Mercury in the Ascendant, the 10th or the 9th: Sagittarius Ascendants with Mercury in the Ascendant, the 7th, the 9th or the 10th, and Aquarius Ascendants with Mercury in the Ascendant, the 5th, the 9th or the 10th placed singly or in combination with Saturn will shine as successful engineers. Saturn and Mercury combination mentioned for Aquarius Ascendant has to be justified by Mercury’s Karakathwa for woodcrafts and Saturn’s Karakathwa for iron, cement and carpentry.

Those who have taken law as their profession should also necessarily have a well placed strong Mercury and an excellent 2nd Bhava. Jupiter and Venus should also be unaffected. The following combinations show lawyers and good speakers:-

The lord of the 2nd in combination with a male planet, having connections of benefics and falling in a Kendra or Thrikona which coincides with its exaltation sign. The benefic owner of the avamsa of the 2nd lord associated with a benefic getting posited in his exaltation sign or Paravathamsa.

The lord of the 2nd Bhava with all points of strength and Vargothamamsa associating with a benefic planet. The strong lord of the 2nd Bhava and Jupiter placed in Paravathamsa.

The strong lord of the 2nd Bhava with benefic connections falling in his exaltation, own or friendly sign.

The strong lord of the 2nd Bhava associated with Mercury or Venus falling in Parvathamsa.

In the horoscopes of teachers and professors, Jupiter and Mercury should be stronger than the other planets. Virgo, Gemini and Sagittarius form the most suitable Ascendants for them though we have teachers and professors with all Ascendants and with all signs in the 10th Bhavas.

Saturn and Jupiter combination having connections with the 10th Bhava shows those engaged in research work. Those having Jupiter as lord of their Ascendants may also be successful as philosophers or religious heads. Combinations of planets like Mercury-Venus, Jupiter-Venus.

Moon- Mercury-Jupiter, Moon-Mercury-Saturn, Sun-Mercury-Jupiter and Sun- Moon-Mercury show strong inclinations for writing, learning and journalism. The Sun in Sagittarius or Pisces aspected by Jupiter; the Moon in Aries. Taurus or Gemini with Jupiterian or Mercurial connections: Mars in a sign of Mercury or Jupiter or in Leo aspected by Jupiter or Mercury: Mercury in a sign of Venus or Jupiter aspected by Jupiter, the Moon or Venus; Jupiter in a sign of Venus aspected by Mercury or Saturn; Venus in a sign of Mercury aspected by the Sun, Mercury or Jupiter; Venus in a sign of Saturn aspected by Mercury: Venus in Cancer aspected by Mercury; and Saturn in a sign of Jupiter aspected by Mercury-all these show the teaching profession.

The Moon and Mars should be stronger than all other planets in the charts of doctors. In the case of surgeons, Mars with all strength, should be favourably posited. Malefic planets in the 10th from the Moon, fully aspected by benefics may be seen in their horoscopes.

But this combination may equally indicate priests, astronomers, and accountants. Tendencies for chemical science could be seen from the planetary combinations-Sun Moon-Mercury, Sun-Moon-Venus and Moon-Mars- Mercury-Jupiter.

Military service is indicated by the Sun in Aries or Scorpio aspected by Mars; the Sun or Mars in Capricorn or Aquarius aspected by Saturn; the Moon in Cancer or Pisces. The Sun in Aries aspected by Jupiter in Leo and Sagittarius with Martian connections; Mars in one of his own signs aspected by the Sun and in a sign of Venus aspected by Venus; Jupiter in his own sign or in a sign of Mars aspected by Mars, Jupiter in Cancer aspected by Saturn; Venus in Leo with the aspect of Mars, and Saturn in a sign of Jupiter aspected by Jupiter and in Cancer aspected by Mercury.

Connections of the Sun with Saturn placed in a sign of Mars; the Moon in Taurus aspected by the Sun and in Leo aspected by Saturn; and Mars or Mercury in a sign of the latter having Saturnine relations point to a livelihood by agriculture. The combination of the Moon-Venus-

Saturn and the 11th Bhava having association, aspect or Varga of Saturn also show agriculturists.

Activities of business, industry and trade may be known by the Moon and Venus combination; by Jupiter in a sign of Saturn with Mercurial connections; by the Sun in a sign of Venus or Cancer aspected by the Moon and in a sign of Saturn with relations of Venus; the Moon in Libra aspected by Jupiter, and by Mercury in a sign of Saturn with connections of Venus.

Musicians, dancers and dramatists could be found by the following combinations:-Mercury-Jupiter; Mercury-Venus; Sun-Moon-Mercury; Sun- Mercury-Jupiter; Moon-Jupiter-Venus; Mars-Mercury-Jupiter; Mercury- Venus-Saturn and the like. In these arts also the benefic planets have a greater share as in education and literature.

The importance of Karakathwas in this aspect of the science could well be appreciated by examining the effects of the following combinations of Mars:-

Sun-Mars – Cruel deeds including killing.

Moon-Mars – Boxing and duels, crafts with clay, leather, etc., and with metals like gold, copper and lead. Also work with sulphur, saltpetre, etc. The native may also be skilful in black arts.

Mercury-Mars – Work with gold and iron. Skill in making medicines and trading in them.

Jupiter-Mars – Mechanical arts, learning in the Vedas and religious texts; discourses in them; strong, liking in the use of arms.

Venus-Mars – Astronomy, mathematics and gambling.

Saturn-Mars – Work or dealings in metals; magic; thieving: making or selling poisons, poison-cure, use of weapons.

The planetary configurations indicative of a few professions furnished above are just pointers to the line of argument to be taken in combining the Karakathwas of the planets. A combination of two planets may very often show quite different effects.

In such cases, the proportion of the characteristics of each planet entering the combination is to be decided based on their strength.

No other aspect of astrology, perhaps, calls for the profundity, acumen, ingenuity and dexterity of the astrologer more than this subject of the fixation of the exact means of livelihood of a native well selected as a fit to pic for discussion in the special issue of the popular magazine. Indeed, this puts to test. The calibre and knowledge of the astrologer.

This year our esteemed Editor has selected a very stiff subject for the “Surya Prakash Memorial Number” of THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE. Next to the question of longevity, it is only the house of avocation that gives the greatest headache even to the best of astrologers.

In the matter of astrologically judging and determining, different mundane houses are allotted to the different needs of Kalapurusha or the individual. There is one house for wealth, another for patrimony. another for income, etc., but there is no such house for avocation or livelihood.

I am saying this with a certain amount of caution, as my readers, mostly astrological experts, may scoff at me. There is one house, Karma, viz., the 10th (midheaven). Karma is a very broad term. Karma means the sum total of the good and bad deeds at our credit when we are born on this planet.

The horoscope is an indicator of our past good and bad deeds at our credit and as to how we are going to work out the interplay thereof.

Thus, while we are relentlessly compelled to work out our destiny in a particular groove, we have to activise in various directions towards ourselves, our people near and dear, our people about us, our society, our country, etc. Livelihood or avocation is only one facet of the term “Karma”.

In keeping with the most liberal understanding of the word Karma, we have tour significators, Karakas for the Karma Bhava, viz. Jeeva Bhanugnya Manda (Jupiter, the Sun, Mercury and Saturn), prescribed by our ancient Rishis. Karma is, therefore, not merely avocation but is a more comprehensive term.

Among the various significations of the Karma Bhava, the most important ones are:

(1) Charitable endowments, status and position – Jupiter

(2) Domain of influence, Fame and name – the Sun

(3) Business, arts and crafts, commerce – Mercury

(4) Trade, service in its various forms – Saturn

The basis of the caste system is their intrinsic nature and qualities:-

The intellectual class represented by Jupiter, the ruling class represented by the Sun, the mercantile class represented by Mercury and the serving class represented by Saturn.

Jupiter’s Influence makes one become a peace-maker, high judicial officer, an establisher of right conduct, right action and right Demeanour, highly religiously attained, a philosopher, a philanthropist, a financier, a banker, etc.

The Sun’s influence gives rulership of a country, land, provinces, district, etc., royal position and dignities, service under the State () what we generally call government service), administrator, a maintainer of law and order, enforcement of commands.

Mercury’s influence: business acumen, commerce and trade, all systems of communications, conveying of messages, embassy and diplomatic missions, trade agreements and establishment of trade conventions, and lastly

Saturn’s influence gives one leadership in labour organisations, trade unions, service under another in various capacities, expert in work and extracting work from others.

These clues will be useful to find out whether an individual will be able to fulfil a specific assignment. Unless that particular indicator is strong and not rendered weak, he will not be able to do so. For example, if the 10th house has no connection with Jupiter and as also its lord or if

Jupiter is not strong and well-placed, the religious, etc., nature will be totally absent. Similarly these clues throw a lot of light on the subject- matter.

Now coming to the subject-matter, Brihat Jataka has devoted one chapter “Karma Jeeva Adhyaya” for this purpose. The guiding planet is the planet placed in the 10th from the Moon or Lagna; also find out who is the strongest among the three the Sun, the Moon of Lagna.

From that mark the 10th lord and find out in whose Navamsa he is placed. This last planet will give the nature of the avocation of the native. It is, however, very difficult-if not impossible-to describe the exact nature of avocation in these present days when jobs are many and openings out of count. But still all these could be brought down under one or the other of the indications given below. Please study the table given below:-

The interpretation of these is quite difficult. If the lord of the Navamsa is placed in a friendly house, the outcome of the avocation will be substantial and in a very agreeable manner, while the reverse will be the case in inimical houses. The financial; affluence will, however, depend on the circumstances of the lords of Lagna, the 2nd, the 11th and the planets placed therein.

A more accurate picture of the particular avocation can be obtained by an examination of the nature of the sign, in which the 10th falls. That will show the line of greatest success and natural aptitude.

The airy signs Mithuna (Gemini), Thula (Libra), Kumbha (Aquarius) show intellectual pursuits, headwork, literary and artistic occupations.

The watery signs (Karkataka (Cancer), Vrischika (Scorpio) and Meena (Pisces) show occupations in which water is the motive power of chief ellement, dealers in soft drinks, textile goods and fabrics, sailors, brewers, chemists.

The fiery signs Mesha (Aries), Simha (Leo) Dhanus (Sagittarius), indicate employments concerned with fire, iron and metals, metallurgy. extraction of ores, utilsing electric energy, industrial concerns, surgeons, military equipments, etc.

The earthly signs Vrishabha (Taurus), Kanya (Virgo), Makara (Capricorn), show manual labour, digging and excavation, agricultural pursuits, fodder and corn dealers, dealers in the produce of the soil in the various forms and kinds.

In the tabular statement of the 3rd column gives the person through whom avocation is secured. It should be intelligently interpreted and hence requires some clarification.

Father indicates that the native pursues the father’s line of profession or continues his father’s undertaking or follows any profession where heredity is an important claim or has added preference in selection.

Mother applies as above, in a redirected sense. It may mean riches inherited from the mother on which he builds his avocation.

Enemies: Realised as a result of keen competition, litigation, defeat in contest or war.

Other sources are clear and required no explanation.

It will be better at this stage to illustrate these principles with a concrete case. Here is a horoscope of Mr. K.

Lord of the 10th from Lagna is Saturn: he is placed in the Navamsa of Jupiter. The native is employed in the leading bank, now nationalised. The fact that the Sun and Mercury aspect the Lagna shows that it is a commercial bank. The native is fully qualified with banking and commerce degrees, Lord of the 10th is placed in Makara, which denotes seaside; actually he is employed at a seaport-town.

The Sun is placed in the 10th from the 10th; actually the father and son were employed in the same bank. The 10th is an airy sign, denoting that the native has to apply his intelligence meticulously anticipating erratic business changes. The 10th has the effect of four planets Rahu, Kuja (Mars), Kethu and Jupiter. This means that he has to work among people of various castes and nationalities, Hindus, Parsees, Gujaraties, Goanese, etc.
