Important Vedic Astrology Yogas
Astrology is a harmonious blend of science and art. This is a unique method of interpretation of the correlation of planetary influences. This implies that there is a constantly moving relationship between the objects of the universe such as the Sun, the Moon and the planets and the small moving objects as the human beings, animals and the like.
Whatever is born or done at a given moment of time adopts the qualities of that particular moment. In as much as a man identifies himself with the physical-self and the physical world around him, so he is indissolubly part of it and subject to the changing pattern as formed by the planets in their orbits. Only by the recognition of that which he senses as greater than himself he can attune himself to what is beyond the terrestrial pattern.
The entire basis of astrology rests on the premise that the pattern of a person correlates with the planetary pattern at his birth moment. The planetary pattern at his birth moment. The pattern will at times exteriorise as “events”.
The accuracy of these which can be checked up in earlier life gives the astrologer the belief that tendencies deduced from calculation of future deeds may be expected to evaluate as certain types of happenings in later life. When the astrologer applies a great deal of common sense he rises above the evidence of his limited senses.
YOGAS, in astrological parlance, are specified commutations or combinations of planets in the different houses of the chart, i.e. certain positions of planets relative to each other or one another or to the ascendant or to the Moon. These constitute the special features and these play vital roles in the evaluation of horoscopes. Yogas are capable of changing the entire complexion of the chart.
This general term Yoga, applies to either one of good augury or of bad. They confer auspicious results and lift one to dizzy heights or cause evil in experiencing untold miseries. In popular language the benefic one is called a Yoga and the malefic one is known as Arishta.
Some Arishta Yogas are so bad that they annul even strong Raja Yogas. Thus the result of an apparently promising chart may invariably fail the native.
Yogas formed from or in relation to the ascendant give results usually from one’s childhood while those formed from or in relation to the moon sign fructify after a described age of years and the degree of manifestation will depend upon the merits and demerits of the acts and deeds of the native.
It should be kept in view that none of these Yogas will ever become operative to the exclusion of any of the other Yogas present in the horoscope. It is, nevertheless, quite possible to distinguish one Yoga from the other.
Yogas become fruitful when the planets are powerful both in the Rasi chart and in the Navamsa chart.
Yogas which are known as quasi permanent indications in a horoscope tend to show the degree of good luck or adversity a person is likely to experience during his life time.
All Yogas are combinations of planets but all combinations of planets do not constitute Yogas. They may be Arishtas as well. There are many types of benefic Yogas like Dhana Yogas, Raja Yogas and Gnana Yogas. Malefic Yogas mean and include Agnana Yogas. Maaraka Yogas, Dur Yogas, Ava Yogas and the like.
In general Yogas which are benefic or malefic govern health, personality, success and happiness in life, financial affluence, high education, psyche, physique, family life, friends and relations, one’s conduct, pleasures, enjoyment of life and fortune and the like.
In astrology, Yogas are formed in several ways due to interplanetary relationship of planets or placement of planets. According to Vaidyanatha Deekshit the established relationship between planets are
1. conjunction; 2. exchange of house; 3. mutual or special aspect; 4. prestigious position; and, 5. strength of some special kind.
Planets are divided into three groups viz. Benefics, Neutrals and Malefics depending on their rulership of certain houses in any horoscope.
According to sage Parasara there are benefics, malefics and neutrals for every ascendant or sign but according to Vasishta, Ganpati Muni etc.; there are Ati subhas (highly beneficial ones), Subhas (benefic) Paapas (malefics) and Ati papas (most dangerous malefics). Vishama grahas of mischievous planets is another category defined by some ancient writers. There are places of elevation and fall for all the planets. Planets which cause Yogas give full, proportionate or minimal results depending upon these factors. Maha Yogas are: Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas viz. Hamsa, Maalavya, Bhadra, Ruchaka and Sasa, Sthira Lakshmi Yoga, Chatussara Yoga, Parijata Yoga, Adhi Yoga, Pushkalaa Yoga, Siva Yoga, Vishnu Yoga, Saarva bhowma Yoga, Chakravarti Yoga, Utkrishta Raja Yoga, Maha Bhagya Yoga, Sree Yoga, Kalaanidhi Yoga, Aiswarya Yoga, Ayanta Dhyanalabha Yoga, Shubhra Yoga, Gajakesari Yoga, Raja Yoga and others. There are in all 3016 Yogas in vogue including Nabhasa Yogas, Aukrui Yogas, Ashubha Yogas, Duryogas and Ava Yogas.
Bhadra Maha PurushaYoga
The Yoga is caused by Budha occupying his own or exaltation sign which are quadrants (Kendra) from lagna. It is note-worthy that the signs owned by Budha (Mercury) are placed next to those of the Sun and the Moon two luminaries. This shows the intimate contact of Mercury with the two princely planets. This Yoga manifests on only those who are born in Common/Dwiswabhava rasis or signs.
Of all the seven planets, Budha alone gets exalted in his own sign. He belongs to Prithvi tatwa (Earth-element) and his exaltation place, Kanya (Virgo) too belongs to this group. He represents “speech” of Kala purusha (the time personified).
This Maha Purusha Yoga manifests only to those born in Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanur and Meena. For Dhanur lagna, Budha in the 7th house becomes a first rate baadhaka even though he confers Maha Purusha Yoga. Similarly Budha becomes a first rate Baadhaka while occupying Virgo (Kanya), its own house. He sometimes becomes a Maraka or a death-inflicting planet, for these two ascendants.
The term Budha means one who is intelligent. The word is derived from the root, “Budha” to understand. The planet governs intelligence as his name implies. Any type of education- be it scientific or philosophical – must necessarily have and enjoy the full support from this planet. A man who is quick-witted or who is of erratic behaviour is said to be Mercurian in character.
Sharpness of intellect is bestowed by strongly placed Mercury. A dull-witted person is governed by a badly placed or weak Budha.
Mercury indicates one’s temperament, intelligence, presence of mind and argumentative nature. The superiority of human beings over all other living beings is attributable to the force of the intellect generated or governed by Budha. Moon governs one’s mind. Intellect is the product of one’s active mind and its powers.
Budha is known as the son of the moon. Budha is also fond of fun. He influences mainly brain and nerves and endows fertility of thinking power and thought, eloquence of speech, sensible arguments and intelligent conversation. But Budha makes the native somewhat reserved.
Strong Budha in a horoscope makes a native capable of learning many subjects. Such native can judge people at a glance and assess correctly the moods of people, the depth of truth and the ability of one’s mental pursuits. Those who have weak Mercury think pervertedly.
Budha invariably learns towards the nature of the planet with whom he is related by conjunction or aspect. Therefore, the effect of Budha as a rule gets modified mutates-mutandis. He is responsible for speech, governs bile and wind and makes one rational. Tongue, nose, bronchitis, bowels, skin, nerves and mental stability complaints are all governed by Budha.
Results of Bhadra Maha Purusha) Yoga – In general, the results said to be conferred by this Maha Purusha Yoga are as follows:-
The native will have a prominent chest, looks like a lion and walks like an elephant. His hands will be long and he is generally of very good morale and conduct. He possesses lovely feet. He is passionate and a Satwika. His nose will be prominent, hair black and his ability to handle situations will be superb. He is loved by his own people and he shares his happiness with friends. He will enjoy a happy married life and conjugal bliss and will be blessed with faithful children.
He will be commanding influence if he takes the profession or service in the area of Madhya Pradesh and generally lives a full term. He will be neat and clean. He will be praised and respected by learned people and he becomes very rich, shrewd and a leader. He will be impressive in his speech and he will mobilize the minds of the public easily.
The native born with Bhadrayoga will become charitable and independent in views and he will be liked by females. His face resembles that of a tiger. His way of walking and its style are as dignified as that of an elephant.
All the three humours viz; Vaata, Pitta and Sleshma will be predominant in his system. He will be an expert in expounding the sacred scriptures. He will be courageous and will be devoted to Brahmins, saints, preceptors mentors and God. He will be of somewhat dark complexion, skilled in fine arts, will be long-lived and will be intent on doing his own business.
FOR MITHUNA LAGNA: The Yoga is formed when Budha occupies the lagna or the 4th house Kanya, his place of exaltation. The lagna being a windy (tatwa) Rasi and Budha being an earthy planet, the placement is not good. No doubt he gets high Dig Bala but he is not at his best. Kanya is the sign of his exaltation and belongs to Prithvi Tatwa. When Budha is in the 4th Bhava he confers wisdom. The native born in Mithuna lagna with Budha in Kanya will be proficient in Vedanta and mathematics.
The conjunction of Budha with Sani in Kanya is good for Mithun Rasi as it would be the conjunction of the lords of Kendra and Kona. But some books discount such conjunction as Sani is essentially the eighth lord first and then the ninth lord. Such people will be full of confidence fond of daring deeds, tactful, clever, alert, foresighted and much interested in material comforts. There will be high degree of selfishness as well.

The native will be tactful, well educated, smart and intelligent. He will be a good orator commanding respect. While in Mithuna Budha confers education, riches, Tapasya, sweet speech, good personality, devotion to Swadharma and a bit of vain glory. Budha represents Vignana or Science and literary talents.
FOR KANYA LAGNA: Budha confers Yoga by occupying the ascendant or the 10th house. When the Yoga is formed in the ascendant it makes the native righteous in conduct, free from fear and, adhering to Dharma or one’s own religious ordinance. Such native become writers or poets. They respect friends and they are of charitable disposition and good oratory abilities. Budha in 10th house assures success in life, makes one intelligent and confers all material comforts. Such people are respected for their charitable disposition.
FOR DHANU LAGNA: Budha confers Bhadra Yoga while in the 7th or in the 10th sign. While in the 7th house Mercury no doubt confers reputation, respect, nobleness, cheerful disposition, righteous conduct ministership, riches and learning in Vedic lore but he spoils the significance of the 7th house to some extent. Budha in Kanya makes people born in Sagittarius enjoy the benefits of Poorva Punya. Such people command good respect and reasonably good wealth. They get good success in all attempts and they are diplomatic and tactful.
FOR MEENA LAGNA: Budha in the 4th or the 7th house confers this Yoga. Such natives are successful in life and they respect religion and ancient customs and traditions. They are devoted to God and preceptors. But they often prove obstinate and selfish. They possess good personality and they make friends of all very soon. They also enjoy all comforts and protection from parents.
Budha in the 7th house generally confers high efficiency in fine arts. But people born in Pisces ascendant with Mercury in the 7th house do not shine well. They become avaricious, jealous and disappointed in love affairs.
These are but a few indications of Bhadra Yoga.
