Independent Business or Avocation
In an independent business or profession one may earn huge profit or sustain colossal loss. Sometimes such business is wound up abruptly. It is considered that the 7th, the 10th, the 2nd and the 11th houses govern income from an independent avocation.
Huge income does not necessarily mean profit; income may be huge but losses too might follow due to swindling or over spending. Out of these four houses representing business the 7th house indicates one’s total independence on his business or profession.
Therefore this house has very little to do with profit. The 10th house is the house of Karma or one’s efforts due to which there will be increase of wealth i.e. increase of profit or earning through one’s efforts. The 2nd house governs Vittavriddhi or increase of wealth. Vitta’ or wealth will invariably increase only through or due to one’s efforts. Therefore, this house is responsible for a high or sizeable profit.
Lastly, the 11 house governs profits from all sources. It is thus this house which gives the highest volume of profit. In other words, the houses 7th, 10th, 2nd and 11th, apart from indicating business, govern also the profit there from.
The 12th house as a rule governs losses. The 12th house from the house of profit invariably governs losses arising out of one’s independent business or profession. The respective 12th house, from the aforesaid 7th, 10th, 2nd and 11th houses or houses of gains are the 6th, the 9th, the 1st and the 10th house.
Of these four houses, viz. the 7th, the 10th, the 2nd and the 11th, the 10th house is the house of profit. This house cannot therefore play a dual role viz. create profit and cause loss. The 12th house is as a rule the house of general losses.
Therefore the houses 6th, 9th and 1st can be safely considered to be the houses which cause loss in independent profession or business. It is a well settled proposition of astrology that
- the Antardasa lord, in any Dasa takes decision about giving a good or bad result during its period; and
- when a clash of conflicting Dasa and Antar Dasa results occur say as in the Dasa of the lord of the 10th house and Antar Dasa of the lord of the 6th house, the results of Antardasa will prevail notwithstanding the planet’s intrinsic or temporal strength.
On the basis of this theory, the following formulae have been devised.
Formula of profit in independent occupation (P.I.0.): One earns huge profits during a Dasa, when the Dasa lord and its Antardasa lord happen to signify the 7th, the 10th, the 2nd and/or the 11th houses.
Provided:
- The Antardasa lord should not signify any of the loss incurring houses viz. 6, 9th and 15; and.
- In case the Antardasa lord signifies the 6th, the 9th, or the 1st houses it must be the significator of the 7th, the 10th, the 2nd or the 11th houses primarily.
Formula for Loss in Independent Occupation (L.I.O.): One sustain loss in independent business during a Dasa when the Dasa lord and the Antardasa lord both happen to signify the 6th, the 9th or the 1s houses.
Provided: any one out of the following two provisions must be applicable to the Antardasa lord viz.
- The Antardasa lord should not signify any house from among the 7th, the 10th, the 2nd or the 11th.
- In case the Antardasa lord signifies the 7th, the 10th, the 2nd or the 11th house, it must be a main significator of 6th, 9th or 1st primarily.

Here one has to determine the strength of the Dasa lord and its Antardasa lord as well or ascertaining the magnitude or the volume of profit and loss since these increase or decrease in proportion to the benefic strength of these.
In so doing one should also keep in mind the strength and the importance of the house of profession. Here is the horoscope of a person who is doing independent business. This is a typical horoscope which is very potential. In this horoscope the basic data are as follows:
In this horoscope the 12th house is occupied by the 11th lord Guru and the 7th house, by its own lord Mangal. The 2nd lord is in the 4th house exchanging house with Surya. The 10th lord is in the 5th house but it is essentially the 9th lord also. The lord of the ascendant is debilitated. The 4th lord is in the 5th house which is considered to be very good. The 11th lord also happens to be the 8th lord.
The native is now running Chandra Dasa (4th lord in the 5th) Rahu Antardasa. Rahu is in the 9th house i.e. 12th from the 10th. Sani is transiting the 7th house causing obstruction and delay. He is the 10th lord in this case. The 7th lord is transiting in the 8th house (2nd from the 7th) on an unusual stay for 6 months. The 11th lord Guru is transiting the 10th house now.
First of all let us determine his profession. Since the 10th place from the Navamsa Lagna is owned by Guru who is in its own Navamsa the native is likely to be successful if he deals in electronic goods, bullion, medicines and edible items. He is presently doing business in partnership with his father and brother, in coir, mats, beds, rubber or foam articles etc. He wanted to know the possibility of his success in bullion and gold ornaments.

Now let us examine his wife’s horoscope. Before that we must mention here that in this chart above, Venus and Saturn (Yogakaraka Sani and Lagna lord Sukra) are in interplanetary was called Bhedam. Shukra is the victor. The charts are as given below:-
In this horoscope the 2nd, the 4th, the 10th and the 11th houses are occupied by malefic planets. There are 5 planets in the 11th house but 3 of them Mars, Mercury and Jupiter are combust. Two good things are that the 11th lord exchanges house with the 7th lord. The 10th lord is in the 11th house. The second lord is not combust. The second house is occupied by Sani. The 10th lord is in the 11th house. Thus she has got Yoga for business in gold and ornaments in her name.
Now she is running Budha Dasa (10th lord Dasa) and Antardasa of Rahu (who is in the 4th house aspecting the 10th house). Therefore, this is the best time to start business in her name.
Sani the 4th lord is no doubt exalted in the 2nd house but it gets Neecha Navamsa. He should be cautious with his servants. The lucky colour will be green.
We can safely say that new business will flourish when Guru goes to Meena Rasi (Pisces). An astrologer should invariably comprehend many aspects before telling all about a horoscope.
