Indicators of Luck and Prosperity in Horoscope

In this world the average man has more than a fair share of iniquities and injustices, trials and tribulations, set-backs and failures. Talented and deserving persons struggle to make both ends meet while fortune favours more often than not mediocrity. Thinking man takes solace in the teachings of Brihadaranyaka Upanishad that, man reaps what he sows.The rationale of the divine science of astrology is also founded on these teachings of the Rishis.

Prasna Marga, the great astrological classic of Kerala, states in the opening chapter that the planets in birth chart indicates that what we experience in this life whether we enjoy or suffer is the result of our Karma done in previous lives.

In another Sloka Prasna Marga teaches that “the balance of good and bad Karma that we bring forward from our previous births is called Prarabda, and it is the delineation of Prarabda that is the domain of astrology”.

Thus astrology provides the clue to the nature of the results of a person’s Karma one in past lives and the manner in which it is likely to manifest in the present life.

The decisively significant factor that showers prosperity on a chosen few and leaves the rest in the cold is Poorvapunya or Bhagya or luck.

In fact it is this elusive element that determines whether one’s is a life of success or failure, happiness or misery, prosperity or poverty, etc.

According to Phaldeepika, it is from the 9th Bhava that a person’s past life is to be investigated.

Saravali the classic of Kalyana Varma in the chapter on “Bhagya Bhava Chinta” Stresses the importance of examining the Bhagya Bhava even to the exclusion of the Ascendant and other Bhavas, for without Bhagya one counts for nothing.

In a horoscope Bhagya or Luck is divined through the 9th Bhava, which is called Bhagya Sthana or Poorvapunya Sthana. It is also known as Dharma Sthana. It is the more important Trine than the 5th Bhava, and is considered very auspicious being Lakshmi-Sthana, according to Maharishi Parasara.

Other more important significations of the 9th Bhava are father, preceptor, righteousness, good conduct, tapas, religion, spirituality, merit, grand children and foreign travel.

For a person to be really lucky and fortunate

• The 9th Bhava in his birth chart should be strong and tenanted and aspected by natural benefics or by the lord of the 9th Bhava or the lord of the Ascendant.
• The lord of the 9th Bhava should be equally well placed avoiding the Dusthanas, and should be endowed with strength (Shadbala).
• More specifically, the lord of the 9th Bhava endowed with strength and occupying a quadrant (Kendra) or Trine (Kona) or the 11th Bhava in conjunction with benefics planets, and similarly the 9th Bhava occupied by a natural and functional benefic planet and not influenced by malefics is an asset in a horoscope.
• Besides these Jupiter, the planet of grace, who combines in himself the Karakatwas of such important Bhavas as the 2nd, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th should be well placed and strong (Shadbala), as also the all-important Lord of the Ascendant.

This would enable the person to earn immense wealth and enjoy the blessings of prosperity and good fortune in ample measure.

Conversely, the lord of the 9th Bhava occupying the 6th Bhava and aspected by an inimical planet or a depressed planet makes the person unlucky. Similarly, the 9th lord in debility or occupying a malefic Shashtiamsa also is an indication of ill-luck.

According to Prasna Marga, occupation of the 9th Bhava by benefic planets results in blessings from the preceptor, happiness from the parents, mental happiness, God’s grace, increase of fortune, and luck, disposition to virtuous and Dharmic deeds, increased Tapas and happiness to and from grandchildren.

On the other hand malefic planets in the 9th Bhava causes ill-health to preceptor, parents and grand-children, ill-luck and misfortune, disinclination to Dharmic deeds, uncharitable disposition and absence of God’s grade.

Astrological classics give quite a few combinations (Yogas) involving the 9th Bhava and the 9th lord indicative of luck and prosperity.

According to Jataka Parijata, the lord of the 9th Bhava occupying a quadrant (Kendra) or a Trine (Kona) in strength and the Ascendant aspected by its lord indicates good fortune. Added to these if the lord of the 9th Bhava or his dispositor (i.e. the lord of the sign occupied by the 9th lord) and the lord of the Ascendant occupy their exaltation or own signs, the Yoga bestows great and lasting happiness.

While studying the 9th Bhava, or for that matter, any Bhava, it is essential to keep in view the Ascendant, for it is a well recognized principle of astrology that the results of Bhavas as have any relationship with the Ascendant or its lord by way of aspect, occupation, Kendra disposition etc. would be surely experienced.

It is also necessary while examining the 9th Bhava signifying Bhagya not to overlook the 5th Bhava, for on the principle of ‘Bhavat Bhava’ the 9th from the 9th Bhava is the 5th Bhava.

Hence both these Bhavas signify Poorvapunya, which manifests in this life as Bhagya. Further even Dusthana lords are said to lose their malefic effects, when they are in conjunction with the lord of the 5th Bhava – such is the benefic nature of the 5th lord.

The combination of these two lords of Konas with the lord of the Ascendant in a Kendra other than the 7th is a high Raja Yoga, which in the modern context would mean exercise of political or administrative powers. Such a combination even in the 7th Bhava can mean fortune through partner-in-life.

Mutual exchange of the lords of the 5th and the 9th Bhavas is a Raja Yoga, which would confer political or ruling powers.

Saravali says that the full Moon, Jupiter, Venus or Mercury endowed with strength (Shadbala) alone or in conjunction occupying the 9th Bhava confers on the person prosperity, good longevity and even ruling powers. Even a malefic planets in the 9th house, if it happens to be its own or Moolathrikona sign and is aspected by benefics makes the person virtuous.

For that matter, any of the seven planets, when exalted in the 9th Bhava blesses the person with wealth, prosperity and virtue; and if the exalted planet occupying the 9th Bhava has the aspect of a strong benefic planet, the potency of the yoga is greatly enhanced.

The lord of the Ascendant, whether a benefic or malefic, occupying the 9th Bhava is also auspicious and highly beneficial.

According to Phaladeepika, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and the Moon endowed with strength occupying the 9th Bhava in conjunction with or aspected by a friendly planet generates a Raja Yoga, and the person having this yoga will be an object of veneration and worship by the masses.

The 9th Bhava and or its lord figure conspicuously in such auspicious Yogas as Bhagya Yoga, Lakshmi Yoga, Dhatrutwa Yoga, Dharma- Karmadhipa Yoga, Srimathi Yoga, to mention only a few.

When the 9th Bhava is aspected by a strong benefic planet from the Ascendant, the 3rd or the 5th, bhagya Yoga arises, which confers on the person good fortune and great wealth.

It will be observed that Jupiter, the greatest benefic alone will be able to aspect the 9th from the Ascendant and the 5th Bhava, while all benefic planets can aspect the 9th from the 3rd Bhava).

The lord of the 9th Bhava occupying his own or exaltation sign identical with a quadrant (Kendra) or Trine (Kona) and the lord of the Ascendant also endowed with strength generates Lakshmi Yoga. This auspicious learning, renown, handsome appearance and all the comforts of life.

When the exalted lord of the 9th Bhava is aspected by a benefic planet and the 9th Bhava is tenanted by a benefic planet, DHATRITWA YOGA arises. This Yoga makes the person munificent and generous with his wealth.

Dharma-Karmadhipa Yoga, which is a Raja Yoga, arises when the lord of the 9th Bhava is in conjunction with the lord of the 10th Bhava in an auspicious Bhava. This very powerful and auspicious Yoga is capable of conferring on the person prosperity, reputation and ruling powers.

Srimathi Yoga, which confers great financial prosperity, learning, reputation and good longevity, arises when there is a mutual exchange (Parivarthana) between the lords of the 9th and the 10th Bhavas, while the lord of the Ascendant is with one of them aspected by Jupiter.

When there is mutual exchange (Parivarthana) between the lords of the 9th and 10th Bhavas (despite one of the planets owning the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th) a high Raja Yoga is generated. Where there is on such mutual exchange (Parivarthana) but other-wise associated and one of the planets owns a Dusthana, the Raja Yoga effects would be very much devalued.

Two other Bhavas having a bearing on financial savings and recurring gains, which are essential constituents of Bhagya, are the 2nd and the 11th Bhavas.

Exalted lord of the 2nd Bhava occupying a trine or quadrant or the 11th Bhava shows financial affluence.

Occupation of the 9th Bhava by the lord of the 2nd Bhava or his joining the 9th lord in the 9th Bhava points to financial affluence of a higher order.

The strong lord of the 2nd and the 9th Bhavas occupying the Ascendant or the strong lord of the 2nd Bhava occupying the Ascendant and influenced by the 9th lord is a Dhana Yoga.

The lord of the 2nd in the 11th Bhava, dispositor thereof in the 9th Bhava, dispositor thereof in the 9th in the Ascendant also shows great wealth.

Mutual exchange between the lords of the 2nd and the 11th Bhavas or each of them occupying his own house indicates financial gains form various directions.

Mutual exchange between the lords of the 9th and the 11th Bhavas is an indication that the person would be prosperous throughout life.

Situation of the strong lord of the 2nd Bhava in the Ascendant or in the 10th Bhava shows self-earned wealth; while in the 5th Bhava it shows the possibility of unexpected gain through lottery speculation, etc.

When the lords of the 2nd and the 4th Bhavas are in the 9th Bhava identical with a benefic sign and are in conjunction with a benefic planet, the person would come by an underground treasure, according to Jataka Parijata.

A benefic planet in the 9th Bhava in a birth chart, whether that of a male or of a female, is a God’s gift, and would mean Bhagya and prosperity. The 9th Bhava is, however, of special significance and importance for the fair sex, as it signifies Sowbhagya, which includes conjugal life of uninterrupted happiness, and also prosperity.

According to Yavana Jataka, the 9th Bhava occupied by Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or the Moon in strength blesses the person with Bhagya, prosperity and virtuous disposition. A well disposed 9th Bhava tenanted by a benefic planet like Jupiter or Venus and an equally strong 9th lord occupying a quadrant or a trine or the 11th Bhava, and Jupiter Bhartrukaraka also strong and well placed ensures long and happy conjugal life, good fortune and virtuous disposition; and this is capable of annulling or neutralizing adverse indications arising out of the occupation of the 7th or the 8th Bhava by malefic planets.

On the other hand, the lord of the 9th Bhava and Jupiter, the Bhartrukaraka occupying Dusthanas is adverse for happy conjugal life; it also indicates that the husband may be aged or short-lived.

The Ascendant, the 9th and the 5th Bhavas are sensitive areas in a Birth Chart and on their strength as also on that of their lords depends the intrinsic worth of the horoscope.

As PRASNA MARGA says’ … out of 12 Bhavas the most important and auspicious house is the Ascendant; the 5th and the 9th Bhavas are equally important; it is these three Bhavas the Benefic planets show their greatest good, and malefic planets prove predominantly evil.”
