Operation of Raja Yoga

In this article I propose to show when Raja Yoga or combinations indicating affluence, power and wealth are likely to operate. The word Yoga means combination. Merit presence of Yogas does not always indicate good. Such a combination or Yoga may be for good or bad. Raja Yoga on the contrary indicates affluence and prosperity.

Raja Yoga depends upon the planets which form it. If the Yoga is purely a malefic combination, then the native will not have mental peace and satisfaction in spite of all material comforts and affluence. He will be arrogant, proud and haughty. On the other hand, if it is formed by benefices, the native derives satisfaction from a sense of gratitude to God. He will be polite, courteous and spends his acquisitions in approved ways.

Mere presence of a number of Raja Yogas by itself is not enough, unless the planets forming such Yogas have sufficient strength, i.e.. free from the influence of the lords of the 6th, the 8th and the 12th.

Dasa (main period) must operate at a proper time. Here by proper time means the age when a man attains maturity. There is no point in a child having Yoga or an infirm man getting such Yogas. The sages themselves say that the Yogas become inoperative if they do not occur at the proper age. The presumption is that Yogas operating between 18 and 50 years are likely to yield much benefits.

The question may arise whether the operation of Yogas at inappropriate ages is an act of destiny. The answer is in the affirmative, since the basis of Hindu astrology hinges on the law of Karma. It has been found that many people will have lost their very good Yogas in earlier childhood and some have indications of enjoying them after 70 or 80. In between these periods, ordinary Dasas operate and the man may have to lead an insignificant life both materially and mentally. Very few are destined to enjoy the fruits.

Here, of course, the arrangement is purely an act of God. By arrangement it is meant that the order of Dasa-Bhuktis which may be good or bad is God-determined.

The time we reckon for the birth of a child is the time when the child is completely severed from the umbilical cord of the mother.

Though surgery claims that severance is within its powers, practically it has been found that the severance always takes place at a particular time.

The following few classical rules may be noted-Satyacharya says: “Presence of the Yogas in the absence of the conditions mentioned above is like moonlight to a blind man.” Kalyana Varma says: “Raja Yogas have a potency of their own and vitality affect a horoscope.” Jataka Alanakara (Sl. 1, Adh III) says: “It has been declared by the ancient sages Vasishta, Sukra, Parasara, etc., that several Yogas whether good or bad in the nativities of human beings depend on the planets constituting them, and that the effects in turn depend upon the Yogas. “When the planets are ill-placed, the man is dwarfed.

In the case of a planet owning two houses, the house which happens to be Moolatrikona will predominate and its effects alone will be felt full while the effects of own house will be half. The effects of both the Bhavas will come to pass in the Dasa of the planets.

The above views should be borne in mind while analysing the Yogas. Such references can be found in the works of Varahamihira who mentions his predecessors such as Vasishta, Gargi, Parasara, Vyasa, Badarayana, Soma, Kasyapa, Satyacharya, Yavana, Chanakya and Vishnugupta.

Raja Yogas form as a result of combinations of trinal and angular lords in favourable houses such as the 1st, the 4th, the 7th, the 10th and the 11th. If lords of the 6th, the 8th or the 12th are in conjunction or in those houses jointly or singly Vipareetha Raja Yoga is formed. The results of such combinations will be that the native will rise to fame all of a sudden followed by immediate downfall or will have short-lived glory and affluence.

From a horoscope, it may not be possible to delineate the native of his birth whether he will be born in poor or rich or royal families. This is evident from Brihat Jataka which says when dealing with Raja Yogas that if the Yogas are effective, a man born in poverty will become a king and a person born in rich families will become an emperor. The above proposition makes it clear that it is difficult to predict the nature of the family in which a person takes his birth. Now we shall take a few horoscopes and see how far these Yogas are effective in the light of the Dasas the natives may enjoy.

Chart No.: Born on 8-8-1912 at 7-25 p.m., at Bangalore.

Balance of Mars Dasa: 6 years, 2 months and day.

The following combinations may be noted:- Three kendras or angles are occupied. Unless Jupiter is 13°20′ to 16°40′ in Scorpio it can not be Vargottama, Mercury is Vargottama. The Moon is not only exalted but is having digbala or directional strength by virtue of his disposition in the 4th house.

Chatussagara Yoga is present, which is said to be formed when all the Kendrasa are occupied. Here three kendras are occupied. The Yoga can be said to be 80% present. Saturn, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter are responsible for the Yoga. The Moon is fortified considerably though he has no akshabala, for the simple reason that he is exalted and is having digbala. Since the native is not likely to enjoy the Moon’s Dasa; nothing can arise out of it.

But this disposition accounts for the native’s shrewdness, intellectual ability and high power of understanding. Jupiter has not only caused the above Yoga but he has formed Gaja-Kesari also. Further Jupiter is in the 10th which is the most ideal position. Jupiter Dasa operated from 9-10-1936 to 9-10-1952. When Jupiter Dasa began the native had started from the scratch but before the Dasa concluded, he had established and organisation employing several people and built himself up into an institution. Further Jupiter is lord of finances and gains. He acquired a fine house and vehicles.

Saturn’s Dasa will end by about 1971. He is lord of Lagna aspected by Jupiter. From Chandra Lagna (natal Moon) he is highly fortified since he is a Yogakaraka and is aspected by the 11th lord Jupiter from the 7th house. The native has been the recipient of the blessings of this Yoga in the form of his being visited by, audience, Cabinet Ministers, high dignitaries, etc.; honour in foreign countries and world-wide recognition and influence.

From 1971, the native will have Mercury Dasa. Mercury is lord of the 5th and is vargottama. He is with the 10th lord Mars and yogakaraka Venus and is disposed in the 7th house. We find here the ample influences of trinal and angular lords generating several Raja Yogas. From Chandra- Lagna Mercury is lord of the 2nd and the 5th and is in the 4th with Venus lord of Chandra-Lagna and Mars lord of the 7th.

From Chandra-Lagna also he is equally well placed. The Yogas are quite powerful. So throughout the duration of Mercury Dasa operating for 17 years, the native will enjoy its fruits in the form of trips abroad, contacts with personalities of the world, acquisition of posh vehicles, etc. Note Mercury is karaka for air-travels. Venus is karaka for sea voyage. So during this period the native will undertake frequent air and sea travels. Perhaps Mercury Dasa will take him to the pinnacle of glory in profession, finance and fame.

Chart No. 2.- Female born on 6-0-1918 at 2-5 p.m. at Kolar.

Here is the horoscope (Chart No. 2) of a lady who was married at the age of 2 without any pretences in life. She has been put to severe struggles in bringing up her family, sacrificing both material and physical comforts. We see some combinations here also. The Sun and Mercury are vargottamas. There is exchange of houses between the lords of the 9th and the 10th

The native had Saturn Dasa from 16-8-1946 to 1965. Saturn is lord of Lagna and the 2nd. Though in the 8th sign, he is in the 7th Bhava. From Chandra-Lagna he is lord of Lagna and the 12th. Saturn gave her all material comforts, but dealt here a big-blow by snatching away a grown-up son from the family. The native at present is having Mercury Das from 16-8-1965. Mercury is lord of the 9th and is in the 10th with the 8th lord Sun, who though debilitated has neechabhanga (cancellation of debilitation). Venus has exchanged his house resulting in Neechabanga Raja Yoga. So naturally the results due to Mercury will be slow.

Balance of Rahu Dasa: 11 years and 10 months.

Generally if there is a combination of the 9th and the 10th lords and if the houses involved are the 10th or the 11th or the 9th, a powerful Raja Yoga is said to be formed. The results will be wealth, fame and affluence. We find several blue-paints to this otherwise powerful combination. The first affliction is due to the disposition of the Sun lord of the 8th. Though he is debilitated he has neechabhanga. The 6th lord Mercury is aspected by 3rd & 12th lord Jupiter. The implication will be opposition, reverses and disappointments in respect of good efforts.

But Mercury is not sterile as such. From chandra-Lagna Mercury gets fortified considerably. He is lord of the 5th and has exchanged his house with Yogakaraka Venus. He is aspected by Jupiter lord of the 2nd and the 11th. Moreover, Mercury has exchanged his constellation with inimical Mars who is lord of the 10th and the 3rd from Chandra-Lagna.

Thus from Chandra-Lagna Mercury is more dignified. The first three years of Mercury Dasa will pass off without much significance. But with advent of second part of Venus Bhukti in Mercury Dasa, possibly after 1970 October, the native will receive the blessings of the Yoga in the form of wealth, expansion of her ambitions and foreign tours. Mercury the planet of air- travel is in a chararasi and is lord of the 9th and is in the 10th. This indicates that she will undertake foreign tours and will be invited to spread her knowledge of the art she is pursuing. The native will enjoy the Yogas fully in the second half of Mercury Dasa particularly after 1973 April/May.

Chart No. 3- Born on 21-5-1940 at 7-50 a.m. at Bangalore. Balance of Jupiter Dasa: 1 year, 7 months and 6 days.

This is the chart of a young man born in an aristrocratic family. The native have been having Mercury Dasa since 1960 November.

Mercury as lord of Lagna is in the 12th aspected by the 2nd lord Moon from the 6th house. The Moon is debilitated but he has neechabhanga. The native started his career by taking jobs on meagre salaries. The disposition of Lagnadhipati accounts for it. But with the advent of Venus Bhukti’s second part, the native is fairly well off.

From Chandra-Lagna we shall study the position of Mercury. Mercury is lord of the 8th and the 11th, the house of financial gains. He is in the 7th, the house of business with the Sun the 10th lord aspected by the Moon the 9th lord. Thus we find that from Chandra-Lagna Mercury is excellently disposed. The above combinations result in a series of Raja Yogas indicating affluence, prosperity and acquisition of vehicles.

The above results will be realised in the second half of Mercury Das to start after October/November, 1969. The debilitation of Mercury in amsa indicates slow progress in all attempts. Since Mercury is inherently strong from Chandra-Lagna the debilitation effects get neutralised. More so, because he has caused Adhi Yoga. Thus Mercury from Chandra- Lagna is considerably fortified.

We can see another combination. Lord of the 9th Saturn and lord of the 10th Jupiter have caused a Raja Yoga in the 11th, the house of financial gains. Though Saturn is neecha, he has neechabhanga. It has been found that people who have neechabhanga Yoga will prosper well financially.

But the native has spent both his Jupiter and Saturn Dasas in his childhood. We shall have to see whether the fruits of their Bhuktis will be enjoyed during other Dasas. Kethu Dasa will operate from 1977 onwards. Kethu is to give the results of Jupiter. From Chandra-Lagna Jupiter is rendered highly significant as lord of the 2nd and the 5th with the 4th lord in the 6th resulting in Adhi-Yoga. So from the second half of the Mercury Dasa to end of Kethu Dasa, the native will have full prosperity.
