Saturn is the Planet of Destiny
Saturn is considered as the most evil but strong planet out of nine planets. Saturn is barren, lame, binding, cold dry, defensive, hard, honest, sincere, masculine, earthy melancholic, nervous and secretive planet. Saturn causes delay. It can even deny the best things of life. It also disappoints. Disharmony, dispute, difficulty, despondency defection and differences are the outcome of an evil Saturn.
Responsibilities, accuracy, precision, perfectness, and definiteness are dignified Saturnian qualities. Plodding, perseverance, patiently working, prudence, economy, saving, endurance, industry, savings, power to keep secrets, stability, self-control, sense of duty etc. are attributed to a beneficial Saturn.
Saturn is the principle of contraction. It moves things towards stability. It gives the power to save and accumulate wealth. It assists one to acquire landed properties. Saturn gives perfection, precision, sophistication and refinement in every field of activity if posited in angular or trine houses.
It rules the solid foundations of things, real estate, permanent building and fixed assets. It gives firmness of conviction, prudence, patience, dependability, capacity for hard work and fidelity when dignified. It is the planet of constitutional law. Saturn’s influence is heavy, restrictive and lasting.
Saturn governs the dried regions of the body i.e. teeth, bones, knees, spinal cord, chronic diseases like neurotic ailment, nervous disorders, spleen disorders, dental troubles, etc. when afflicted.
Saturn governs the two signs of the Zodiac i.e. Capricorn and Aquarius, the 10th and 11th houses of the natural Zodiac. He is exalted in Libra; debilitated in Aries and detrimented in Cancer and Leo.
Saturn rules elders, debts and repayment, wills and estates, jails, prisons, exile, shoes, stone, legal matters, traditions, the sense of duty, printing, fertilizers, servants, time, limitations, justice, just rewards; old age, old things and the past.
Saturn is karaka (Significator) of the 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th houses. Stupidity, dullness, want of originality, dearth of ideas, laziness, idly wasting time are the outcome of ill-posited Saturn.
Saturn denotes all matters kept hidden or in secret, excavation of tunnels, under-ground trenches and burial ground. Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from its position. His favourite stone is blue sapphire, and his mental is steel. During transit, Saturn stays in one sign for two and half years.
1. Saturn determines the course of destiny in one’s life.
A strong Saturn is absolutely essential in a horoscope to accomplish anything worthwhile, which is why it has been rightly called the planet of destiny, because it appears to be the common denominator in the charts of those who have made their mark in the world.
- A horoscope with a weak Saturn denotes a weak and colourless person who can’t do anything either for himself or for the country.
- A detrimented Saturn in a Trik house causes permanent physical disability and gives the native too many troubles and hardship in his path of progress. He then fails to rise in life and leads a vegetable existence, which has got no meaning at all.
- A combust Saturn in an evil house along with Mars causes violent accidental deaths.
- Astama Sani i.e. Saturn in the 8th along with Mars or any aspect of Mars to Saturn in the 8th also causes violent accidental deaths.
- A retrograde Saturn in the 5th or 9th makes one a strong personality or a creative genius.
- Combust Saturn along with Ketu in the 10th makes one a great political leader.
Capricorn is Saturn’s home sign where he expresses his best qualities most naturally. Libra is his sign of Exaltation and Aries is his sign of fall. Saturn’s natural reserve, caution, patience and aptitude for careful planning are at its best in Libra but these same qualities clash with Aries’s fire and combativeness.
Saturn shows its evil nature most effectively when posited in its detrimented sign Cancer.
Saturn is a strong karmic planet. Saturn actually determines the course of destiny in one’s career if posited in a strong angular or a strong trine house and the native then rises very high in life despite hardships, troubles and delay.
Saturn brings fortunes late in life. Saturn burns away one’s past sins by putting him in trouble and distress. The most remarkable event happens when the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter is posited in the karmic destiny signs like the 5th or the 9th.
The 5th house indicates past karmic effects in this life and that is why it is called ‘Purva Punya Sthana: The 9th house shows future karmic results. The 5th house stands for creative talent and creative self-expression. The 5th house stands for higher intelligence, higher knowledge and higher inner mind.
So Saturn expresses its best qualities if conjoins with Jupiter either in the 5th or in the 9th house and the native gets their best benefit; he then rises to the top.
2. Saturn creates fortunate and unfortunate comments in life.
Grant Lewi in his book ‘Astrology for the Millions’ has found out one most important theory by which you can find out your best period in life. According to him, Saturn is the planet of fate and destiny. By making research on its transit movements, he came to the conclusion that transit Saturn when travels from 7th to the 10th house (strongest point in a chart) big political leaders assume their maximum power and earn name and fame during that time.
They recede from name and fame when transit Saturn travels from the 1st to the 4th house (weak points in a chart). By the time when transit Saturn comes in the 4th they all fade away completely or death makes their end.
But the theory is very effective in the case of political leaders only. In other cases, this theory is not so effective.
3. Saturn is the creator of all sorts of historical events. Saturn get detrimented in Cancer. Its ruler the moon is a strong enemy of Saturn. When transit Saturn enters into Cancer and stays for two and half years and when conjoins with Mars there, world’s most important historical events usually happen during that time.
In 1946 Saturn entered Cancer on 10.6.46 and stayed there till Jan 1948. Mars conjoined with Saturn in Cancer on 22.9.47. During this time three most important historical events occurred in India viz. India became independent, Pakistan was created and Mahatma Gandhi died of bullet injury on 30.1.48. So transit Saturn when comes in Cancer and conjoins with Mars, most important historical events usually happen.
4. Whether Astama Sani i.e. Saturn in the 8th is at all harmful.
Astama Sani i.e. in the 8th if conjoins with Mars or gets aspects from Mars causes all sorts of violent deaths. Conjunction of Saturn and Mars in violent signs (Aries, Taurus, Scorpio and Aquarius) is a very dangerous affliction which generally causes violent accidental deaths.
Transit of Saturn: Setback in Career and Loss of Office
Much has already been discussed and illustrated as to how Saturn, during his transit, exercises his power and influence to produce memorable events in one’s life and career. It transpires from the foregoing discussion how effortlessly it is possible to fix up the period with a high degree of accuracy, when Saturn crowns one with brilliant success in career or massive victory in endeavour.
Saturn’s priority in the judgment of human career and action has so firmly been established that it is useless to magnify and impossible to nullify our main thesis any further.
As Saturn is the charioteer of our Karmic life, he can both control the reins of horses and unshackle them. He can also switch off all lamps and suspend or close a well begun play.
As unmixed happiness is not possible, so also an unobstructed career. Our journey through life means forward and backward movements and also break journeys. It is commonly experienced that success stems from attempts and failures, and similarly, in more cases than one, a sunny day of career is over-clouded by an abysmal darkness.
As Saturn gears up one’s activities and boosts up one’s career, so also he occasionally gives red signals.
By a careful study of Saturn’s position during his transit, we can ascertain the period when a person is destined to suffer set-backs in life and career or when one is to envisage an accident in karmic life like termination of office or suspension in service. A transfer to a clerk may be lethal blow, stronger than what dethronement is to a ruler. Rules, however, function uniformly for both a ruler and a clerk.

Rule I – Setback of grave nature and ignominious downfall are indicated in the natal chart, if lord of the 10th house has only Rahu or Ketu in front of him without any planet in between. The same results accrue when lord of the 10th house is associated with Rahu or Ketu, not forming thereby a Raja Yoga.
When Saturn, during his transit, occupies a sign, wherefrom he cannot maintain any connection, by virtue of aspect or union or exchange of position with either of the 10th lords, reckoned from ascendant and the Moon sign and, more particularly, when lord of the 10th house falls in the 6th, the 8th or the 12th form the location of moving Saturn, the outcome is manifest in the form of setback or crisis in career and activities, failure in undertaking or loss of power and position.
Saturn cripples or wrecks a flourishing career when he becomes delinked with lord of the 10th by aspect, union or exchange of position, during his transit, which synchronizes with Rahu’s transit over his own or Ketu’s natal position or over lord of the 10th who has exchanged his position with lord of the 10th in a chart, where lord of the 10th has Rahu or Ketu ahead of him in the same or a different sign with no planet in between.
In such a case, Saturn should be delinked with the stronger of the 10th lords, where there are two such lords, and may aspect or transit over a weak 10th lord eclipsed by Rahu or Ketu and a lord of any evil house simultaneously.
At the time of debacle, Rahu or Ketu may also be united with lord of the 10th in the debilitation sign of either of them or in the 6th, the 8th or the 12th from the 10th lord.
Example: Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) Born 19 November, 1917 at 11:12 p.m. I.S.T. at Allahabad.
Cancer Ascendant 26°45; Saturn 21°47′ ; Mars 16°23′ ; Sun 4°7′ ; Mercury 13°13′; Sagittarius Venus 20°59′; Moon 5°38′; Jupiter (R) 15°2′; Rahu 10° 39′ ; Ketu 10°39′

The nativity, replete with powerful Raja Yogas, is very often found to contain pitfalls and is subject to some kind of weakness, which may sometimes escape our notice due to oversight. Indira Gandhi’s chart has been illustrated earlier with particular reference to Saturn’s aspect on the planets, responsible for her ascendancy to power and particularly to the pinnacle of glory in 1971. We should now pause to observe that Venus, lord of the 10th from her Moon sign, but seated in the inauspicious 12th house also. It is nonetheless true that Venus occupies his own Navamsa, which inter alias accounts for her success in career. But the adverse and negative effects of Venus cannot be nullified.
It is due to this that she began to confront severe hostilities and problems following Saturn’s entry into Gemini. Saturn, during his progress through Gemini, could directly aspect Venus, owner of the 10th from the Moon. Venus, apart from being eclipsed by Rahu, is stationed in the 12th from the Moon and in the 6th from ascendant. When Saturn entered Gemini, radical Jupiter, with whom Venus has exchanged his position naturally in the natal chart, also fell in the 12th house form moving Saturn.
Since Saturn was aspecting ill-disposed natal Venus, blemished by debilitated Rahu’s association, the period was sure to be a troublesome and turbulent one. That natal Jupiter, with whom her 10th lord Venus has exchanged his seat, fell in the 12th from moving Saturn was also a danger signal.
The only silver lining in the dark cloud was Saturn’s aspect on Venus. Saturn did not lose contact with the 10th lord Venus during his transit in Gemini. After a careful examination of all these factors, we can understand why the period of Saturn’s movement in Gemini saw the growth of a massive youth and students’ movement in Bihar.
In 1974, when Saturn was continuing his movement in Gemini, Jayaprakash Narayan launched his movement, which, backed by enormous popular support, began to grow in size and strength and spread quickly like fire.
On 11 December, 1973, Jayaprakash gave a call to the youth for restoration of democracy in the country. That was, in a sense, the beginning. It is important to note that retrograde Saturn in Gemini was then almost at the same longitude as occupied by natal Rahu and Rahu was in his natal position, eclipsing radical Venus, lord of the 10th from the Moon sign.
Jayaprakash Narayan’s movement was committed to total revolution as well as removal of the Prime Minister from power. It came as a big challenge to Indira Gandhi and her position was in jeopardy. That Venus is ahead of Rahu is, of course, a plus point.
The perilous condition reached its climax, when Raj Narain’s petition, which he filed against her election in 1971, was finally decided by the Allahabad High Court on 12 June, 1975.
The justice, in his thrilling verdict, declared her 1971 election void and disqualified her for six years from holding any political office or becoming a Member of Parliament. A stay of judgment for twenty days was, however, granted. Her position was quite at stake, but she preferred to continue in office until her appeal was decided by the Supreme Court.
The Opposition protested against her holding office, as Saturn was aspecting her natal Venus, the planet helped her keep the crisis at bay for the time being.
On 25 June, 1975, she clamped internal emergency in the country. All the notable opposition leaders were immediately imprisoned. It is worthwhile to have a glimpse of Saturn’s position.
When internal emergency was proclaimed, Saturn was still in Gemini, aspecting her natal Venus, lord of the 10th from the Moon Sign. But Rahu was no longer in Sagittarius, but in Scorpio. Thus, the danger period was over. Promulgation of emergency kept the crisis at bay.
When natal Venus, lord of her 10th from the Moon Sign was aspected by Saturn from Gemini and associated with Rahu simultaneously, it sparked off problems, but could not cause a downfall. For Saturn, traversing Gemini, was also aspecting Mars, lord of the 10th, lodged originally in Leo.
Situation worsened with Saturn’s entry into Cancer when Saturn commenced his journey through Cancer, he lost his contact with natal Mars and Venus, lords of the 10th from her ascendant and the Moon respectively. Nor could he maintain relationship with natal Jupiter or the Sun, the two guiding planets with whom Mars and Venus have exchanged their positions mutually in the horoscope.
Furthermore, Saturn became united with natal Saturn, lord of the 7th and the 8th. Election was held on 16 March, 1977, and Indira was rejected by the electorate. Saturn thus caused her downfall when he assumed almost the same longitude as that of natal Mars, lord of the 10th house from ascendant, during his progress through Cancer.
Saturn’s movement in Cancer, obviously, marked the gloomiest period in her life and career. She had to face and fight a plethora of changes and propaganda against her.
After Saturn’s entry into Leo, she was able to gradually brighten up her de-glamourised and tarnished image. Leo in her nativity is tenanted by her 10th lord Mars. It is, therefore, no wonder that she retrieved her lost position to a considerable extent, when she won the by election from Chikmangalur constituency on 8 November 1978.
Saturn’s longitude then came close to that of natal Venus. It is true that even during Saturn’s movement in Leo, she was not absolutely free from humiliation and harassment. The reason is not far to seek. Saturn was associated with Rahu in Leo, afflicting her 10th lord Mars on the one hand and moving, on the other, in the 10th from the Sun, who has exchanged his place mutually with Mars, lord of the 10th in the horoscope.
But her enemies were fast dispersing and the Janta Government showed signs of cracking up, particularly after Morarji Desai had resigned the office of premiership on 16 July 1979. The utter failure had infighting of the Janta Party ultimately paved the way for her staging a triumphant comeback.
It must be pointed out that Morarji’s resignation from Premiership was, in actually, a pleasant victory for Indira and the event coincided with Saturn’s occupation of her natal Mar’s longitude in Leo.
In 1982 and also in the first half of 1983, there cropped up a Yoga almost similar to the one formed in 1974. For, Rahu and Ketu interchanged their natal places on the one hand and Saturn was aspecting Ketu in progress through Sagittarius on the other. This time also Saturn in Libra was aspecting Venus, lord of the 10th from the natal Moon. Venus, ahead of Rahu in the horoscope in the same sign, occupies his own Navamsa.
Saturn’s aspect on such a Venus cannot cause of downfall, however problematic the period may be. Ketu in Sagittarius was, obviously, not as bad as Rahu in the same sign by reason of his stay in his exaltation sign.
Nevertheless, during the period in question, Indira Gandhi had to face unhappy developments of violence and disharmony in Punjab and Assam.
The infamous Nellie massacre in Assam took place on 18 February, 1983 and all attempts for a solution of the Punjab tangle ended in fiasco. The period turned out to be one of her ebbing hegemony when her political leadership began to falter and fail.
