The famous astrologer Pandit Gopesh Kumar Ojha has brought out the meanings of Upachaya and Apachaya Upachaya is increase to heap or prosperity and Apachaya is decrease to heap or adversity. When these terms are applied to specific houses, we come face to face with one of the greatest misconceptions of Indian Astrology. Upachayas or houses of prosperity have been taken as the 3rd, the 6th, the 10th and the 11th calculated from the Ascendant.
Pandit Ojha has raised doubts as to how the 1st, the 4th, the 5th and the 9th can be taken as Apachaya houses or houses of adversity. He has tried to explain the significance of the term Upachaya on the basis of twelve divisions of the body of the Kalapurusha but the elucidation is not at all convincing. Before bringing out various principles out of Upachaya furnished by Varaha Mihira, Kalidasa, Mantreswara, Vaidyanatha Pandit, I desire to elucidate on real interpretation of Upachaya as we find in Maharishi Parasara’s Brihat Hora.
At the outset, Maharishi classifies twelve signs under triple fours – Kendras or angles; Upakendra or succeedents: Anukendra or cadents (he has not used these foreign terms like Panapnara and Apaklima.
Kendras of angles (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses) are the main supporters in the preservation of life. Upakendras or succeedants the (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses) add to the significances of Kendras while Anukendras or cadents decrease the angular effects. (The theory of the 2nd house advancing the cause of a house and its 12th house obstructing it is based on this Parasari exposition.
The theory has to be applied for angles only the 1st house with the 2nd and 12th houses; the 4th house with the 5th and 3rd house; the 4th house with the 5th and 3rd houses: the 7th house with the 11th and 9th houses.
The karaka theory is an exception to the above principle. Bhavakaraka or karaka planet for a particular house is very effective when it is in the 12th of the concerned Bhava or house because karaka or cause must precede effect or significances of a Bhava or house.
The 5th and 9th houses from the Ascendant are termed Kona or triangles. The 6th, the 8th and the 12th houses from the Ascendant are called Dur or Trik (Dusthanas). The 4th and the 8th houses from the Ascendant are called Chaturasra.
Upachayas or houses of prosperity are to be calculated from houses that (or the 2nd, the 5th, the 8th, and the 11) in the order of the 3rd, the 6th, the 10th and the 11th houses respectively. Upachaya is, therefore, definitely related to Upakendra and not Lagna. The matter may be tabulated thus:

It will be clear from the above tabulation that the 4th, the 5th, the 9th and the 10th houses are really Upachaya houses and no one can deny that these are the houses of prosperity. The other eight houses are, therefore, Apachayas or houses of adversity.
Again, I am telling the good and bad implications of the houses. The 11th, the 3rd, the 8, the 6, the 2nd, the 7th and the 12th houses are bad. Those houses occupied by lords of these evil houses definitely get spoiled in their significances. Maharishi has excluded the 1st house or house of creation from the evil touch because the 1st house is to the native neither good or bad as such.
(ii) It will be clear from the Slokas given in the Dasa Antardasa chapters by Maharishi Parasara that Upachaya houses are not to be calculated from the Ascendant; it is a misconception – otherwise, why would Maharishi specify Lagnat upachaye. The 3rd, the 6th, the 10th and the 11th houses from the Ascendant are definitely malefic and as such, how can they be houses of prosperity? Rather, they are houses of adversity.
If these houses of adversity are to be converted into houses of prosperity, there is absolute necessity of additional qualifications of benefic significance, e.g., combination with Yogakaraka planet occupation of benefic sign or Amsa of benefic planet, with Varga excellence, combination with benefics, aspect by benefics, in friendly sign, in exaltation sign or amsa. etc.
(iii) When we have come to definite conclusion that the 4th, the 5th, the 9th and the 10th houses are really to be termed Upachaya houses and Upachaya houses are tobe calculated neither from the Ascendant nor from the Moon but from Upakendras in the order of 3rd, the 6th, the 10th and the 11th respectively, let us wade through famous astrological treaties from Varaha Mihira to modern times.
The triangles are be towers of special wealth (i.e. lakshmisthanam mentioned above) while the 4th and 10th houses bring special happiness (ie., vishnusthanam mentioned above). In usual astrological parlance, the 2nd and 11th houses are considered Dhanasthanas or houses of wealth the 2nd house brings in unearned wealth while the 11th house suggests wealth got by one’s own efforts.
The 5th and 9th house bring in special wealth children, Mantra Siddhi, kingdom, high education, etc., pilgrimage, charity, etc., bring in the punya of the 9th house. The 4th house brings in happiness of a sweet hem life under the fostering care of mother, while the 10th house brings in happiness and joy of your highest activity in this life.
The best advancement in life requires not only wealth but also happiness. The natives having wealth and happiness are subject to Rajayoga.
The 9th lord is minister while the 5th lord is special adviser. Their relationship makes a native king mutual aspect, combination and exchange of signs. If triangular lords are combined with any one of the seven evill house lords, the native becomes king if born in royal family.
Maharishi Parasara brings out two new principles – relationship between angular and triangular lords brings Rajayoga is the previous exposition; now he mentions that the relationship between two triangular lords can also bring out kings. The second principle brings out an exception to the Parasari principle that lords of seven evil houses getting relationship with Yogakarakas becomes Yoganasakas.
Relationship with the 5th and 9th lords can convert lords of evil houses but the effect of Rajayoga becomes modified; relationship between the 5th and 9th lords can make an ordinary man king, while relationship between the 5th and 9th lords combined with one of the seven evil house lords can make a man born in royal family only king.
In Chapter 36 of Poorvakhanda, Maharishi has directly mentioned the conversion as under:-
- Dasa of any planet – even malefics – related to the 5th or 9th lord gives benefic results.
- Dasa of one lord of the 6th and 7th houses in occupation of the 10th house or related to the 10th lord brings benefic result. Dasa of one lord of the 2nd and the 7th in occupation of the 4th house or related to the 4th lord gives benefic result.
The first case relates to Leo-Ascendant while the second case refers to Aries and Libra Ascendants. The point for emphasis is that relationship with the 4th or 10th lord or house can convert even malefics into benefics.
If the 4th and 10th lords exchange signs, the result is Ishtayoga not Rajayoga. It should be noted that relationship between two triangular lords brings Rajayoga but relationship between two angular lords cannot go so far they bring benefic yoga of happiness. Again, the four fold planetary relationship is applicable for triangular lords for the purpose – only best planetary relationship of exchange of signs can bring Ishtayoga for angular lords.
The highest Rajayoga effects – great prosperity, empire, all round happiness come out of exalted Ascendant lord, the 9th lord and the 10th lord in relationship.
Profession and Artha Trikonas
In these days of space voyage, man still needs the four Purusharthas, or human ends as indicated in our Sastras for his life and enjoyment. They are Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. As the topic is Determination of Profession’ automatically the ‘Artha’ (meaning wealth one comes to play.
Astrologically, 1, 5, 9 houses are connected to Dharma, 2, 6, 10 to wealth (Artha), 3, 7, 11 to Kama and 4, 8, 12 to Moksha. We shall confine to 2, 6, 10 houses only for determination of profession. Incidentally, it is pertinent to point out that 2, 6, 10 houses form a Trine themselves. It is of great significance to note this point so that further understanding is easy.
Majority of us work for wages and obtain a status in life. The status in life and their various gradations are termed as Yogas, Raja Yogas, Ava Yogas etc. including Darida Yogas etc.
How these trines play their part in determination of profession, let us analyse 2nd house stands for body. Netra (eyes), Vak (speech), Dhanam (wealth) family (kutumba) and so on.
Healthy body, good looking eyes (free from defects), good speech, good family background with moderate wealth are very essential for worldly life. Further to earn our wealth through salary and other means, the above are very essential.
In modern parlance in aptitude test for jobs, good physique, clear eyes, good command of speech all come into play. How beautifully 2nd is linked with job as the preliminary stage in earning the wealth.
Take the 6th house now. The 6th house stands for service (working under somebody with rules and regulations to be complied with) competition, anxiety, inimical activities, tiredness exhaustion, debts, sickness of the body, trouble from enemies, untimely meal and so on.
All those who had experience of service would have definitely felt all those above things in various degrees.

In management terms, competition, working for the desired targets, anxieties, rivalry connected with the above, hypertension, finally sickness, all are there for an individual serving in any organization. 6th house aptly proves the proverb, “no pains, no gains.”
Let us see the 10 house. 10th house stands for success, name and fame, status. The power to command others, government titles, and honours in profession, nature of profession etc.
In materialistic world of today, a man is judged by his status. It is known as “Padavi” in Sanskrit. It has a significance or importance. The present Janma’s 6th house corresponds to previous birth’s 10th house. Automatically the present Janma’s 5th house corresponds to previous birth’s 10th house, or Dharmasthana. Dharma and Karma are inter-related. In simplest term, they are known as thought and action. Seed of action is thought. As per the seed only, the harvest or fruit.
Our Sastras stress the need for any Karma or action based on Dharma or right path. With corruption in all walks of life, the statement holds good as a Beacon of life. The great apostle of truth Mahatma Gandhi used to always stress the point, the “means” are more important to achieve an object.
How beautifully the 6th house is connected to Poorva Punya or 5th house. Based on the same logic, the present Janma’s 10th house is the past birth’s 2nd house or house of wealth, and present Janma’s 2nd house is previous birth’s 6th house. How nicely are houses 2, 6, 10 inter- linked: it is a divine order so to say.
Let us proceed further. In astrology, every house has “Shatru Sthana” or detrimental house or inimical house”.
- For 2nd Shatru Sthana is 7th
- For 6th Shatru Sthana is 11th
- For 10th Shatru Sthana is 3rd
How they affect let us analyse. 7th house is Kalatra and a Maraka Sthana allso. Good health and an understanding wife is the greatest asset of a man. That very seldom people get both is a different matter or destiny.
In practice if 7th house is stronger than 2nd means, the individual becomes henpecked and gives more support to the wife’s side in all aspects, especially financial side. Many quarrels in the family between parents and son and his sisters are due to this. On the other hand if 2nd is stronger than 7th, the gentleman supports his own family members, contributes for his sister’s marriage, brother’s education etc. supporting his aged parents etc. Incidentally, this becomes a heart burning’ problem for the father-in-law. Some fathers-in-law lament about their son-in- law’s family responsibilities.
Or 6th, the inimical sign is 11th or house of gain. If the 6th is stronger, no gains and no savings. Always one will be in debts and manage life somehow or other. 11th house is stronger than 6th means saving enough cash for any contingencies. 6th stronger means more medical bills. Here 6th house is 12th to Kalatra Sthana or 7th house. Some people are forced to spend more money for wife’s health problems, operation etc.
In practice, 6th house should not be stronger than 11th. If it is so, even loans are availed from Provident Fund for medical expenses. Gain is almost nil, so to say.
Let us analyse the 3rd house which is 6th (inimical) to 10th house. 3rd house stands for Parakrama, Success over rivals, mental torture etc. It is one of the Sthanas. 3 house stands for Upachayas intelligence and power to communicate (the expression part of it). If it is weak, the man is bypassed for promotion, seniority over-looked and he feels rejected also. Sometimes judicial remedy is sought in the form of writ etc.
Sometimes, the seniority list is quashed or ordered to be re-drawn by the Court. All due to 3rd is being weak when compared to 10th house.
Now let us take Mrithyu Sthana (8th house) for 2, 6, 10. For 2nd-8th house in 9th or Bhagya. For 6th-8th house is 1st or Lagna. For 10th, 8th house is 5th or Poorva Punya. From the above, it is implied how 1, 5, 9 play their part in professional side and prospects of an individual is crystal clear.
Lagna or 1st house must be stronger than 6th for good health. 9th house must be stronger than 2nd for getting real benefits from service such as increment, clean record of services, good annual assessment, confidential report etc. So far we have seen how 2, 6, 10 the houses are affected by the inimical and Mrithyu Sthanas (i.e. 7, 11, 3, 9, 1 and 5).
In other words Artha Trikona Signs (or 2, 6, 10) are linked up with Dharma Trikonas (9, 1, 5) and Kama Trikonas 7, 11, 3).
It will be very interesting to note here at this stage that Moksha Trikonas (4, 8, 12) are linked up with 2, 6, 10 also; how?
For each house, 11th from it, is supposed to be Labha Sthana or house of gains.
- For 2nd – Labha Sthana is 12th
- For 6th- Labha Sthana is 4th
- For 10th- Labha Sthana is 8th
12th is stronger than 2 means, more spending only. If the 4th house is stronger than 2 means, more spending only. If the 4th house is stronger than 6th, department test are passed in time, and seniority gain. If 4th is weaker than 6th, hurdles to pass the departmental test or passing late thereby the individual slides down in the seniority list.
8th is stronger than 10th means, the man does not live to see his higher elevation of status. The proverb there is many a slip between a cup and a lip aptly fits here. Sometimes, his children have to clear the loan taken for house building etc. as the 8th is house of legacy. Many men discharge the father’s liabilities and loan etc. That is their fate.
To sum up, in determining the profession, I request my colleagues to study all the 12th houses and compare them with respect to 2, 6, 10 and draw a final picture.
Second House – The Most Powerful Intellectual House
The second house is said to be a highly powerful intellectual house. If two or three creative planets like the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Ketu, Jupiter, Moon or simply Jupiter and Venus are placed in the second house and in Gemini or Aquarius in a natal chart, it confers great genius and the native shines as a great poet, novelist, dramatist, or study writer as in the cases of Rabindra Nath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, etc.
The voice or speech which is ruled by the second house is said to be the seat of all sorts of creative or spiritual activities. God spoke and thus created this world. Jesus Christ saved life of many dead persons simply by a loud voice like saying ‘Arise’ or ‘Awake’. Gregory Rusputin, a Russian saint used to heal his patients by loud prayers.
Magicians perform great magical feats simply by the power of their speech or loud voice. They usually keep the audience spell-bound simply by the power of their speech. A good debater can easily rise to the top. Great politicians rise to the great political heights simply by their great oratorical powers.
Voice or speech is the seat of all sorts of creative or spiritual activities. As the second house rules over the voice or speech, so it is a highly intellectual house.
Taurus is the second sign of the Zodiac and its ruler is Venus. The Moon gets exalted here. So Venus and the Moon are creative planets. The 5th sign of the Zodiac is Leo and its ruler is the Sun and is a highly powerful creative and intellectual house.
Singly Mercury is not so powerful but jointly with the Sun it absorbs all the good qualities of the Sun and this conjunction is called ‘Budhaditya Yoga’ which is a very powerful intellectual Yoga. Venus adds beauty and colour to this highly intellectual conjunction. So the conjunction of the creative planets in 2nd or 5th and in a airy sign like Gemini or Aquarius makes one a creative man of genius.
The airy signs like Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are highly intellectual and creative signs. Any two or three creative planets if posited in Gemini or Aquarius or in the 2nd or 5th will certainly turn one into a highly creative man of genius. The airy signs confer fertile imagination, quick perception, great intuition, high expressing ability, good memory and quick grasping power.
The second house also represents money, self-acquisitions and liquid funds. It provides the resources to earn money; it reveals the methods to be applied to earn money. Planets posited in the second house indicate the nature of labour and hardships to be employed to earn money.
Mars or Saturn if posited in the second house entail hard labour and hard struggle in early life to earn money. By its reflect action to the 8th house, it deprives one to own or inherit any ancestral properties. The native will be a self-made man and he will have to proceed alone. He will not have any outside help. Conjunction of Saturn and Mars or Mars and Rahu or Ketu and Saturn in the 2nd house gives hard labour and hard struggle in early life but it gives success and prosperity in later life.
Jupiter or Venus or the Moon in the second house gives very early money or quick money. By its reflex action to the 8th house, it gives enough of ancestral properties, liquid funds through inheritance. The native becomes a rich man just after birth.
Rahu is the Lord of the Asuras. His wants are unlimited. He does not remain satisfied with petty things of life. He conducts all sorts of underhand and secret business. He gives enough of secret money like bribes, black money, speculation profit, and profit from gambling.
The Sun in the second gives enough of ancestral properties through inheritance. But it demands hard labour and hard struggle in early life but it gives success in later life. The native gets a high Government post or he occupies a top position in life.
