Predictions concerning profession are troublesome because of the complex nature of modern, social, economic, and political conditions. For determining the occupation of a native we basically study the following:

  1. Rasi-Chart
  2. Dasamsa Chart
  3. Dasa periods i.e. the main and sub-period lord prevailing at any given time.

(i) Rasi-Chart is the main chart. The influence on ascendant, 10th house and 11th house indicate a native’s profession. In fact, for finding the profession of a native a horoscope has to be judged in its entirety. The strongest planet and influences on the tenth house all help in determining the profession of a native. Rasi-Chart should always be studied along with the Chalit-Chakra.

(ii) Dasamsa Chart is to be studied for determining the profession and status of a native. It should always be studied along with the Rasi-Chart and never alone. Every divisional chart is a part of the main Rasi-Chart and should never be studied alone.

(iii) The main and sub-period operating at any given point are responsible for various ups and downs, changes and determination of profession of a native. We should carefully examine the Dasa periods operating at the age a native has to choose his career.

In Indian context, we should see the Dasa periods at the age of 18 years to around 30 years. These years will lay the foundation of a native’s career.

It is the combined effect of the above factors that determine native’s choice of vocation. The various important factors which are responsible for a native’s profession are described below.

The Importance of Ascendant

Ascendant is the most important house in a horoscope. The influences on it are responsible for a native’s appearance, career, outlook towards life and character. It determine if the native will be an intellectual, rugged or sporty type, the enterprising type who will flourish in self business or working class type including clerks, labours etc.

A planet if strongly posited in the ascendant and its Dasa period operates during the formative years of a native, has a definite effect on the career of the native.

The Importance of Tenth House

The most pronounced effect on a native’s choice of career is that of the tenth house. We should basically examine the following:

(i) The planets posited in the tenth house. If more than two planets are posited then their combined effect should be considered.

For example, if Mars and Mercury are in the tenth house. Mercury rules young people and it likes to play. Mars is a Kshatriya or belongs to a warrior class who likes to show is physical powers.

Their combined effect produces a sports person. Now, suppose the sign in the tenth house is a fiery one. This may make the native a wrestler or a body builder. This way an astrologer should intelligently consider the effect of various planets on the tenth house.

(ii) If there is no planet in the tenth house we have to consider the tenth lord and influence of various planets on it.

(iii) Then note the kind of triplicate to which the concerned sign belongs.

  • An airy sign indicates mental powers, planning, oratory and fluency.
  • A fiery sign suggests force of characters, grit, ability, self- aggressiveness, factories, dangerous pursuits, surgery, and dentistry.
  • An earthy sign gives patience, practical ability, business interests, prudence, planning for material welfare, agriculture, foodstuffs, stocks and shares, clothes, gardening, and immovable properties.
  • A watery sign suggests liquids, commercial travelers, agencies, dress-makers, furniture shops, laundries, hospitals, chemists and druggists, nurses, salesmen, navigation and so on.

The Importance of Second and Eleventh House

The eleventh shows a native’s source of income. Suppose Mercury is the tenth lord and is posited in the eleventh house. It is with Mars and in Dasamsa it is in fiery sign. Then the native may be an accountant (mercury) employed with military (Mars and fiery Dasamsa).

Here tenth house determined the native’s vocation and eleventh house determines the source of income. In this manner we should properly scrutinize both the houses.

Second house is the house of wealth and finances. Various combinations influencing the second house and its lord is responsible for native’s financial position.

In fact, second house and the eleventh house and their lords should be strong for a financially rewarding career.

The Importance of Dasamsa-chart

Sage Parasara says that we should study the Dasamsa chart for knowing about a native’s vocation and status in life. The Dasamsa chart is very important for studying changes in a native’s career and ups and downs in his career.

The following points should be kept in mind while studying a Dasamsa chart:

(1) The Dasamsa chart should always be studied along with the Rasi- Chart and never alone. See the following example:

Here, the readers will notice that Mars is in the second house and is exalted in the Dasamsa Chart (and also Navamsa). But still Mars cannot give a career betterment. This is because Mars rules the 3rd and the 8th houses and is, therefore, the worst malefic for a Virgo ascendant nativity.

If it is in the second house, during its Dasa it will destroy the significations of the second house i.e. wealth of the native. Because Mars is exalted in the Dasamsa chart it can give factory, industry, own business etc. But the net result of this will be loss of wealth as the 3rd and the 8th lord is in the 2nd house.

In the above manner both Dasamsa and the main Rasi-Chart should be studied together. All divisional charts are a part of the main chart and can never give results independent of the position of planets in the Rasi-Chart.

If a planet is weak in Rasi but strong in Dasamsa chart it can still give god results regarding career of native.

A planet strong in Rasi- Chart but debilitated in the Dasamsa chart will give adverse results (but only if it is not in a very strong position in Rasi-Charts). If Dasamsa ascendant lord or a planet associated with the tenth house in the Rasi- Chart, is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house in the Dasamsa chart it will give adverse results. If a planet associated with the tenth house in the Rasi house is very weak or combust, it will never give good results even if it is posited very strongly in the Dasamsa chart.

(2) See the house in the Dasamsa chart in which the tenth lord of Rasi-Chart is posited. Lord of this house has a lot of bearing on the native’s choice of vocation.

(3) Various influences on the Dasamsa ascendant and the 10th house in the Dasamsa tenth house should also be properly scrutinized before pouncing the result.

The Importance of Operating Dasa

There are times a natives goes through major changes in his career. At other times he may have multiple professions. All these facets at different times in a native’s career can only be gauged through the operating Dasa periods. Similarly the Dasa period operating at the career making age, i.e. from 18 years to around 30 years should be seen.

The Points to be Remembered

We have to intelligently consider various combinations in a horoscope before arriving at any conclusion. It is the entire horoscope which has to be considered and not the tenth house alone for determining a native’s profession.

Suppose, in a horoscope, third house is very strong and so is the fifth house. They are also connected with Venus and Moon. Further both these planets are well placed. This will give artistic and musical abilities. Now if these planets are also associated with the eleventh lord it shows that the native will earn income from is artistic abilities. If they are related to second house in some, then the native will gain vast wealth from music and art.

The above example basically shows that a horoscope has to be considered in its entirely and we have not to consider the influences only on the tenth house. Though, of all the houses which affect the native’s profession, the tenth house is the most important.

We also have to consider the most powerful planet in a horoscope. A very strong planet, in powerful Yogas, gives a definite aim in life to the native. It makes native work with single minded devotion towards a particular goal.

Astrology and Vocational Guidance

Judgment of suitable vocation from astrological considerations alone is a risky and difficult undertaking. In modern times, the number of different kinds of employment available is so great that it is almost impossible to accommodate all of them within the framework of twelve planets and twelve houses. The field is vast and much experience is necessary before the astrologer can venture to give specific advice regarding a particular vocation. Hence it is not possible to deal with the subject adequately within the limits of a magazine article, and the following may only be regarded as a summary.

It is the practice of India astrologers to pay attention to the 6th and 10th houses only and neglect other parts of the horoscope. This is only a superficial way at looking at the problem. The horoscope should be studied as a whole and all the relevant factors should be taken into account.

First examine where the majority of planets, the Ascendant and MC signs lie in the triplicates and quadruplicates; that is, whether they lie in cardinal, fixed or mutable signs, etc.

A native with a majority in cardinal signs requires a vocation where there is much activity, initiative, and leadership. A fixed sign person is suitable for jobs which are more or less routine requiring no initiative and offering a secure tenure.

A mutable sign individual will be at home in intellectual employments, traveling, as agents, managers, and subordinate work under others.

Now see where the majority of these factors lie in the fiery, earthy, airy or watery signs. A fire person is suitable for outdoor work; as a pioneer, he has zeal and emotional power and ambition.

An earthy person is a good practical worker, would like agriculture, farming, etc.

An airy individual inclines to mental occupations, like writing, commerce, accountants, etc.

Persons with a majority in watery signs have emotional and imaginative powers and are fit for acting, preaching, occult work, imaginative writing, etc.; they also incline to occupations at sea, liquor trades and many other everyday occupations.

The signs in which the planets are placed including the Ascendant and MC) are also to be considered when determining the profession. The following list culled from various authorities will serve as a guide to astrologer:

Aries – Engineer, military, pioneer, sportsman, travel, adventure, physical work.

Taurus – Farming, cattle and poultry breeding, cashiers, traders, musicians.

Gemini – Journalism, writing, teaching, designing, communication work like post office, messengers, etc., intellectual work salesmen.

Cancer – Traders and shopkeepers, shipping, public service and religion.

Leo – Finance, stockbroker, company promoter, manager, politics, government work.

Virgo – Medicine, clerical and secretarial, writing, journalism, gardening, horticulture, research worker, accurate detail work in service of others, teachers, librarians, statisticians.

Libra – Art, decoration, jeweller, milliner dressmaker and designer, broker, agent, sailor.

Scorpio – Surgeons, sanitary inspectors, chemists, soldiers, sailors, butchers, engineering and trade.

Sagittarius – Religion, philosophy, educator, professional athletes,

publishers, explorers.

Capricorn – Politics, government employment, accountant, businessman, financier.

Aquarius – Work under companies or large institutions or under government, scientists, teacher, lecturer, and musician. Pisces

Pisces – Actor, hotelkeeper, painter, poet, social worker, nurse, grocer, plumber, draper work in charitable institutions.

Choice of a profession is also very much dependent on the ruler of the horoscope, and the strongest planet in the chart. According to Herr Ebeertin such a planet would give indication of a suitable profession such as:

The Sun – Inclination for a secure and leading position, like managers, officials.

The Moon – Sociological occupations, in which qualities of the heart predominate, like taking care of children, teacher in lower classes, psychologist.

Mercury – Good comprehension, critical faculty, skill in expression and writings, ability for commercial, scientific and literary pursuits.

Venus – Sense of harmony, beauty, arts, delicate craftsmanship. Mars – Will, determination, technical and handicraft skill, suitable for technicians, engineers, sportsmen, fighters, etc.

Jupiter – No specific profession. But if configured with other planets indicates success in profession signified by that planet.

Saturn- Concentration, perseverance, depth, endurance, are characteristics of this planet which prefers to work in the background rather than in the full blaze of publicity. Farming, forestry are suitable.

Uranus – Fondness for anything new or novel, progress, reform. He is therefore a reformer, inventor, and also in a negative sense, a revolutionary and insurgent.

Neptune  – Susceptible, suggestible, with knowledge of human nature. Hence an imaginative writer or actor, as well as a swindler.

Rahu – Occupations where team-work is necessary, or work

carried out in company or in contact with others.

The indications of triplicates, signs, planets and houses should be blended together, and only thereafter a suitably vocation should be fixed.

For instance, for an engineer, a connection between Uranus and Mars or Uranus and Mercury is important.

For a military career, aspects and strength of Mars alone are not sufficient indication for leadership: ability for organization and prudence should also be present.

For a medical career, a combination of the Sun, Jupiter and Mercury is indicated. For an intellectual, strong Mercury, better if configured with Saturn, is desirable.

For a politician or minister the ability to lie fluently and convincingly (Mercury with Neptune) is an asset.

Whenever a strong Jupiter aspects or combines with the factors indicating the profession, success comes to the native. The 11th should be well fortified, and if monetary gains are expected, the 2nd should be strong.

It must further be noted as Mr. Carte remarks: “It should be borne in mind that these (i.e. astrological) influences affect the native’s personal inclinations, when the sign and planets are rising. The signs may also potentially affect the destiny by being on one or more of the three earthy houses i.e., the 2nd, the 6th, the 10).

It is in this way that people find themselves forced or drifting into uncongenial occupations; the ascendant indicates the natural inclination, but some strong sign or planetary satellitium posited in the 2nd, the 6th, the 10th houses places them in another walk of life altogether.

For example, a man with Mars and Jupiter in Scorpio is made for an open air life and would be perfectly at home roughing it; but he has Mercury in Virgo on the MC and destiny decrees that he must go into a city office, until the force of character shown by the ruling sign and planets can assert it. Such cases are not known.”

Questions are often asked whether the subject would do better in his own business or in service. Indications have been given above from which a balanced conclusion can be drawn.

Concluding it might be well to remind the practitioner that numerous factors enter into a determination of a suitable vocation, and this cannot be determined at a glance from the 10th and 6th houses and their lords. External circumstances also play a crucial part in the choice, e.g.. availability of suitable jobs, etc.

Often the son is compelled to follow the profession of his father resulting in failure and unhappiness. All these relative factors should be well weighed by the astrologer before pronouncing judgment.

Lawyer or Judge: Jupiter rules law. So do its two signs i.e. Sagittarius and Pisces. Similarly, the sixth house (court cases) and the ninth house (law) are also important. All airy signs are important. Of all these, Libra is the most important. If the above are strong and connected with the tenth house and the ascendant the native’s career is connected with law. If Leo and Sun also get involved he will receive his salary from the government, that is, he may be a judge or a government lawyer. Saturn connected with Libra and 10th or Jupiter gives legal career.

Note: Rahu and Ketu to the next house, i.e., Rahu to the 5th house and Ketu to the 11th house in Chalit Chakra.

In Rasi Chart the 10th lord is exalted in Libra. Libra is the sign of law. Its presence with Sun (who has exchanged houses with Venus) shows employment connected with the government. Saturn is very strong. It is exalted in the Rasi Chart and in own house in Navamsa and Dasamsa chart. This gave native a high position in government connected with law. The native was a Supreme Court Judge.

Here, Jupiter the 9th lord is aspecting Moon ruling the mind and thus native studied law. Mercury, the 6th lord is also in Libra with Jupiter and Sun. All these factors show a career connected with law.

In Dasamsa chart Libra rises. Jupiter is in own house with Dasamsa ascendant lord Venus which is exalted. The combined effect of all these factors shows a career connected with law.
